Pre-race routine:

Had spahgetti the night before and drank alot of water. Came into race mornoing weighing 216lbs. I ended up driving out of Killeen with family in tow. Ate normal breakfast of Sunbelt cereal and water. Got family loaded drove down from Killeen arrived at park appr 0630am. The family was not to pleased with parking and lack of cooler on wheels will work on that next time. Got transition set up. By this time I was getting pretty excited. Loved the singer of the anthem too.
Event warmup:

Stretched and took a quick jog.
Swim
  • 15m 21s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 03s / 100 meters
Comments:

Stayed on outside most of swim. Managed to past several caps from earlier wave felt good about that. Kept head down worked on gliding through water with less strokes. Water seemed to really refresh me after waiting in wetsuit for start. Sprinkled and rained some. Humidity was soaring.
What would you do differently?:

Probably get in water before race if possible.
Transition 1
  • 03m 32s
Comments:

Still have shoes on through transition. Had trouble getting wet suit off ankles almost fell down in the process. Did have less stuff this time and made transition less cluttered. Only essentials. Had suit down to waste by the time arrived at transition.
What would you do differently?:

Practice getting out of wetsuit while being tired.
Bike
  • 39m 29s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.89 mile/hr
Comments:

Stayed in saddle entire time which was good. Several times had to pass on the right side do my inexperience in large bike events or my poor assesment of bike traffic. Enjoyed riding downhill felt exhilerating.
What would you do differently?:

Pedal down hill. Got scared about taking turns at high speeds. Not much oppurtunity for that where I live. Work on hills more. Had a enervitene and had removed cap before race and placed on bike but still could not get cap off. I guess the compound solidified in cap. Had water on bike. I think I am replacing aero bottle with multi fluid bottle for water and gatorade mix. Definitley find some way to keep aero bottle cold possibly use aluminum foil next time with ice. Maybe have a small container to hold bottles and then place them on bike refill aero bottle on move.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition time did not register. I noticed that the timer did not beep when I went across the mat. I kept on going. Had problem getting left shoe un clipped. New cleats never worn before. My average speed increased over the BTU race in April. Thought transition went really smooth. Also had fuel belt . Noticed not too many runners with any additional fluids.
What would you do differently?:

Adjust cleats before race and try out. Learn to mount and dismount with shoes attached to bike. Maybe someday. Maybe rethink hat thing Nike dryfit hat might be just too hot. Definitley find some way to keep aero bottle cold possibly use aluminum foil next time with ice. Maybe have a small container to hold bottles and then place them in
Run
  • 35m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Overall I did not run with any gusto at all. I was really hurting early in run. My actual pace was off by over a minute from last race. Not sure if my endurance was hurting or the humidity. Thought I hydrated enough.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more. Train in heat more work on running technique. Fartlik runs a must but be carefull about shinsplints.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate and drank whatever I could find. The tents were already crowded. Ate a piece of pizza and drank two bottles of water. Had my recovery drink waiting back at car though. Sought shade and sat on my but. Found family looked for results and did not find my name. Used my USAT chip not theirs. Didnt think this mattered.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat and running ability. My swim is still my best sport. Run still lacks inspiration. Bike is improving little by little.

Event comments:

Look forward to doing this race next year. Seeing the pros up close inspires me to train even harder. Now I know this is a sport and that I am not a rookie anymore. I am a triathlete. Thank you Beginner Triathlete.

By the time I started running already overheating and sweating pretty bad. Heart rate was elevated and lower abdomen was starting to cramp.
Course: Street run with little shade. Several aid stations with ice water was a life saver. Humidity killed me or am I the only one. Should of realized this early and mentally prepared for this. But I dont think anyone realized this until race day.
