Pre-race routine:

After friend told me he was going to use this race as a big ole brick, I decided to join him in riding the ~9 miles over to the race from our neighborhood Starbucks.

There were quite a few more (and longer hills) on the way than I remembered. Add that we got a later start than we envision + the extra weight of the transition bag = I was started to feel my legs in the first 5 miles.

Event warmup:

Met up with Brett (Rocketman) and a couple others from our tri-club just before the start. Brett was kind enough to lock our bikes up on his bike rack.

Comments:

Started out in the back with my peeps and then worked my way up through the crowd. Had to stop once to adjust shoes, which cut into time, but overall did okay.

Also ran naked for the first time - no Garmin to gauge pace or HR. Having trained with it for so long it actually felt liberating to not know ...

Did the typical sprint to the finish line - thought my heart was going to explode if my lungs didn't catch fire first!
What would you do differently?:

I walked three water stops in order to hydrate and get my HR down. Next time I ought to do a better job keeping my HR in check through better pacing and active recovery.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and cheered on my friends as they finished. Turns out 4 guys from my neighborhood Bible study also ran the race as well, so it was old home week.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It is tempting to say riding the bike over while lugging the full t-bag (note to stupid self - clean out the @#$% junk in the bag before lugging it around!), but I think it has more to do with pacing + reliance on the Garmin.

I've sent the Garmin to Kansas due to difficulties it is having in picking my HR. I am going to use this opportunity to run naked while it is in the shop in order to get a better "perceived effort" feel for pacing.

Event comments:

A good race in that it is close to home - can race and be home before 9:30 am, leaving the rest of the day available for family time.

The only change I would make is to more volunteers handing out water + to add an additional water stations along the course to split up the runners trying to get it. It ended up being pretty crowded around the two water stops.

Thought that I hit the "lap" button on my watch going through the 5k mark, but apparently not. Judging by feel, though, I do not think the second 5k differed too much from the first.
Course: Two loop race around North Point Parkway, relatively flat but with enough of a grade change to feel the downhill run ... as well as the accompanying uphill segment. Thankfully it ended with a downhill grade.
