Swim
Comments: Ben said that he passed a few people, and was passed by one. Overall he felt pretty good about the swim. Transition 1
Comments: Long run, through Salt City Splash, to the parking lot where transition was set up. Bike
Comments: Ben rode my hybrid, which was a good choice. He would have suffered on his mountain bike. He said that he passed 10-12 pups and one dog. He felt good about his biking, and thought it was his strongest leg. I agree. Transition 2
Comments: I'm not sure what took him 53 seconds -- no changing shoes, just racking the bike, taking off his helmet and running. They had told us not to run with our bikes in transition, so maybe he obeyed the rules/request. What would you do differently?: I'm considering getting Ben a road bike. He doesn't even have a decent mountain bike, and if he really likes cycling, he should have a good bike. Run
Comments: Ben was suffering a little -- with side cramps. I'm not sure how to help him with those because I don't get them. I told him to walk if he needed to (which he did), and to try to take full breaths. If he could get that taken care of, his run time would really improve. We got to run together for the first half mile, then he turned around and I continued. It was fun to run with him. He really can't complain about this time since he didn't train for the run very much. He said he and another boy were sprinting toward the finish, and he was going to take him, but the boy's family was there cheering him on, so Ben backed off and let him go to the finish on his own. I was proud of him. Post race
Warm down: Banana. ART on his calf/Achilles. Cupcakes. Jimmy Johns on the way home. We shared a pickle and half a loaf of day-old bread. What limited your ability to perform faster: He didn't really train adequately for the run. He did a good amount of swimming and cycling, but he should have run more. Tuesday, the week of the race, he was diagnosed with Tonsillitis and put on antibiotics. He was pretty much out of it until Thursday, when we picked up training again -- really at that point, I was just trying to be sure he knew how to handle the transition element and that he practiced on my bike. Too late for much else at that point. Event comments: Very fun race for his first time out. He loved it and wants to do another one, but "This time I will train for it." :-) Last updated: 2012-08-12 12:00 AM

Got up at 5:00 a.m., dressed, then drove to Hutch. Ben ate a frozen yogurt and drank some water.
Ben swam 100m to get used to the water. After being all bravado about the event in the weeks leading up to it, he was very serious and focused the morning of.
