Swim
Comments: Rough day in the water. Some current at start, and just enough chop to be rough on the way back. Swim was crowded, and people weren't getting off the dock. I positioned myself well, but the start was a mess as about 200 people had false started and moved forward before the horn. I felt solid until the return leg, I thought something was wrong, and realized after that it was the current. However, I had a decent swim overall. I tried to draft a little, but it seemed like a crowded swim, so I didn't do as well as I would have liked. Better both for the age group, as well as overall compared to 2010. What would you do differently?: Swim More Transition 1
Comments: Big race, big transition. I wore a bike jersey, so it was easy, as I had already stashed everything in the pockets. Ran in my shoes, which I could have done without. What would you do differently?: Keep shoes on pedals, like I usually do. Bike
Comments: I felt LIKE CRAP on the bike. I usually love to ride, and I got out there and settled in, but never really felt good. Not only was I nauseous and burping, but my left foot still felt out of sorts. I even had to take my feet out of the shoes and ride on top for a while to relieve pain. However, on a good note, my seat was great. David Hoy passed me on the third loop and inspired me to ride better, but the damage was done. Not as good as 2 years ago, either time, age group or overall. 17 minutes slower. What would you do differently?: Ride more, get my cleats fixed. Transition 2
Comments: Had a decent transition. Dumped my gear, grabbed my stuff, and even had time to use the port-o-let. I did forget my electrolytes in my bike jersey. What would you do differently?: Not much. Run
Comments: Blech. Just didn't have it this time. Strangely, I had a better marathon time this year than in 2010. However, although my AG placing was better, my overall wasn't. I just felt like crap. Nothing specific, but a huge mental failure for me. I thought I was doing OK through 8, but just started to fade. No specific issues, just lack of oomph. On the good side, I was able to catch my friend David and we shuffled the last 5 together and crossed the finish together. What would you do differently?: Execution... Post race
Warm down: Pizza, walk to hotel, shower, dinner. What limited your ability to perform faster: Execution and poor training due to work lsat 2-3 weeks. Event comments: Still love this race. It took a toll on me knowing I wasn't having a good bike, but I was able to survive and still put an OK time in. Now, I want to do better! This race is well supported, and this year the heat wasn't as big a factor, but that may have been because I was moving slower. Last updated: 2012-08-15 12:00 AM

Ok, so my wife said that my race report wasn't informative enough. Even though the forums have lots of good general information about the race, here is some background.
This race is great! Cozumel is a tiny island off the coast of Mexico. The race is usually held at the end of the shoulder season before their high season kicks off. Since they have regular tourism, there is lots of space at the hotels, condos, etc. Also, there are lots of taxis.
And, since the race has been going on since 2009, it is now well known.
Cozumel is beautiful, with beaches, sun and great water for snorkeling and diving. As a destination, it is hard to beat as a family pleaser while you race.
This was my second time at Cozumel.
Although the water is usually calm, there is almost always some current. This year, a combination of wind and current made the swim tough. I heard that over 200 people didn't finish the swim.
Since wind is to be expected, having wind on the bike course isn't a surprise. This year though, it seemed like the wind was just where it needed to be to make the bike harder than usual. It didn't take away from the stunning beauty of the island.
It may take a while, but about 1/2 of the loop is in a perfect beach/swamp setting and the beaty of the landscape helps distract some from the suffering.
The run is through the downtown and resort area by the airport. People usually camp out and cheer you on. This makes the run exciting, and also helps increase motivation.
I was really hoping to PR here.
Wake up at 2:30, have a snack.
Wake up at 4:30,Suntan lotion, breakfast, get nutrition and bottles ready.
Walk out to find a cab.
Wander around, use port-o-potty, get to dock and jump in.
