Swim
Comments: The swim start was the absolute coolest. I got in line for the ferry to the start right away after checking on my bike to make sure tires were still inflated and such.. and dropped off my special needs bag... then lined up to reboard ferry to start. I was hoping to get in first ferry but ended up getting in second... I felt like a rock star waving to the spectators on the shore as we chugged up stream. I could tell right away we would have a fast swim as any boat we passed that was anchored the tide was pushing it in our favor.. this would be a fast swim! Water was murkey, smelled kinda like funk and I ended up with a beard of muck around my face after swim. There was a little chop coming in towards end but the current made for a quick time. Put my foot down right before the finish to only retract it from the discusting foot deep mud in the water.. had to have the volunteer help me out of water. Wet suit stripers are awesome... out and in trans 1 in a flash What would you do differently?: Not a thing.. was a decent swim considering the muck we were swimming in. Transition 1
Comments: Trans 1 was quick. Had a volunteer help get my stuff out of the bags. I told her she didnt have to help.. but she said that was what she was there for. Ok.. was really happy at how fast I could get my bathing suit off and bike gear on. Volunteer even said she would put all my stuff in my bag for me.. really i said.. she said really.. ! What would you do differently?: Not a thing. Got my liquid nutrition in me. Felt good coming off a fast swim, ready to tackle 112 miles. Bike
Comments: Aid stations were fine, more than i was used to in a race and felt ok about them. I think this was the most dangerious course I have biked to date. It was a challenging course but a fair course. What would you do differently?: I need to do more long distance on hills and work a bit more on my nutrition. Transition 2
Comments: A volunteer took my bike for me and I headed to the tent, but first to a potty break. In the tent i asked for water and was told there was none. I was a bit upset as I needed water for my liquid nutrition and didnt want to wait until i got back out on run course. I made the best of it and next time will pack a bottle of water in my bag! I changed into my run gear and headed out to the run course. What would you do differently?: Transition 2 took too long but i think its because my brain was cooked. I was a little bit nutrition deficent at this time and just plane fried. So it took longer than normal to do basic tasks like changing and such. Will pack my own water bottle just to be safe so I could get my nutrition in me while in trans 2. Run
Comments: I always think its funny that in ultra run races they offer so much more applicable food than they do in an ironman. Example is in ultra runs they offer potatoes with salt, PBJ's, general food and in ironmans they only offer grapes, oranges and pretzels... I needed a PIZZA at about mile 16... but again i know the difference i knew what they would have on the course so if I wanted something else I should have packed it. I think they should look into the darker section of the course and figure out how to get people to escort people who are running alone late.. I was passed by two groups of men in the park.. late.. it was dark and they were not runners.. they could have easily turned around and grabbed me and pulled me into the brush.. it was really desolute in spots and i got a bit nervous about that. I ran the 24 hour race in philly and someone got mugged there and philly was lit well and we were allowed escorts to help protect us.. so just thinking maybe for those women and or men later in race that perhaps some of the volunteers could maybe either run or bike with some of the back of the packers just through the bad sections... Sure there were aid stations every mile but when someone is running/walking 15+ min miles there is alot of time in between stations for things to happen. I was fine.. i am used to running in the dark and such but i am more concerned about a newbie who wouldnt be looking for those type of dangers What would you do differently?: Fix my nutrition... Post race
Warm down: Run to the ferry to get back to my NJ hotel! What limited your ability to perform faster: Nutrition... I lost about 5 pounds and need to fix this. Event comments: I LOVED the race but would not do it again unless they changed some of the logistics. It was a very expensive race for me, and I knew this going into it. NYC is expensive. But i thought it would be more in NYC and that we would be running down parts of the street in NYC and that was a big no... I think my overall experience this weekend was fantastic... and very pleased i got to do it.. but would look towards other races for the price point in the future. Last updated: 2012-08-17 12:00 AM

Never sleep well the night before a race and maybe got an hour total sleep. Was up at 2am in order to line up for ferry at 3:30am... Ferry left at 4am. Brekfast was coffee, oatmeal, then later poptart, gateraid and a gel on ferry prior to swim.
At 3:30AM it was 75 degrees out.. the temp will get to 87 degrees around 1pm during bike. I prefer warm over cold and was in my bathing suit with shorts and a long sleeve shirt cover for the pre-race attire.
Ferry ride to start was interesting... everyone was tired and ready to just get this going.
Not really anything specific... other than normal stretching to wake my muscles up and more poptart and gateriad as to keep my blood sugar up during the long swim.
