Pre-race routine:

Got up about 5:15 am, some coffee toast and ready to ride to the race on my bike
Event warmup:

Not great conditions to start warm up. It was raining, windy and they kept postponing the start for weather, Got in the water and swam about 100 meters and felt pretty good. The sat around for almost an hour, got cold and stiff so warm up was not much help.
Swim
  • 23m 8s
  • 440 yards
  • 05m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Just an awful swim and maybe a sign not to do anymore ocean swims. Started getting nervous when I saw the first group was taking more than 11 minutes to complete the swim. The waves were pretty strong and the current was pulling swimmers down the beach. Did not wear a wetsuit which was a mistake. Started out ok and then about 150 meters in just fell apart getting fatigued against the waves, ended up side stroking some
What would you do differently?:

wear a wetsuit, start out slower, on the way back should have let the current take me down the beach instead of fighting it
Transition 1
  • 03m 30s
Comments:

a run up the beach and then into transition which was basically just full of water and mud from the rain, not a bad transition
Bike
  • 29m 58s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.02 mile/hr
Comments:

pretty good bike but really did not like the format, 4 loops up a 15 block run, turn around and come back, way too much bike traffic for such narrow lanes, could not get up any long run speed, slick road surface and saw a few wipe outs
Transition 2
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

no issues, just muddy and slick in transition
Run
  • 25m 47s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

beach run definitely slowed me down, was much faster up on the boardwalk, had knee surgery 6 weeks ago and was concerned about this, it held up until about 2.5 miles in and then started to hurt but finished.
What would you do differently?:

should have allowed more time between surgery and race
Post race
Warm down:

got some food, checked out the results

What limited your ability to perform faster:

have not allowed enough time from knee surgery

Event comments:

Overall pretty disappointing performance after some better races before. Liked the organizers, liked the race atmosphere and great post race food, but, I did not like the course overall, ocean swim out instead of parallel, bike course way too crowded (and could not open it up) and 1.5 miles on the beach run and onto boardwalk was not my preference
