Swim
Comments: Lots of shallow water but elected to swim instead of walk as much as possible. Very heavy traffic with large groups of long course coming around for 2nd lap just before we started. Hit rocks with hands a couple times near first bouy. Swam straight inside line right along bouys. Swam into and got kicked by many, many people doing variations of backstroke and breastroke but I was maybe near front of my heat and passed most obstacles with a couple strokes. I was not up for a brawl in the water due to quirky back, very crowded swim but generally relatively minor contact. A jetski did a tight turn near the first turn bouy but fortunately I saw the waves when sighting and timed strokes and breathing to not get dunked. Was very carefull to swim until pretty much everything was dragging bottom then slowly stand up and start running to avoid further tweaking back or hamstrings, success. What would you do differently?: Not much, I haven't swam much for a couple weeks but was hitting the pool with good frequency (although short duration) for a month or two before that. Really pleased with how well it went, being wetsuit legal certainly helped though. Transition 1
Comments: Again very carefull getting out of wetsuit due to back, had some minor sticking on ankles. What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: Lack of consistent biking really showed here. I've been getting a 2+ hour weekend ride but no or very short midweek ride so didn't expect much. The first hill seemed to last forever, not too high of exertion level it just kept going. The new crank performed flawless, I was slightly worried haven not thoughoughly tested that I might be prone to drop a chain, may have raised seat too much, or shorter cranks might be too short. I'm not one to try something new in a race but with poor training and a tweaked back I figured there wasn't much to lose, but all went well. Jim caught me about 4 or 5 miles in, I heard the woosh, woosh of a disk coming up and new it was him, of course he put the hammer down for the pass and I tried to hang but it wasn't happening today. What would you do differently?: train? Transition 2
Comments: went for the wrong rack in transition (loop can be seen on bikes GPS trace) similar yellow towel in same spot 1 rack over caught me, spectaters laughed at my loop. THen took sweet time getting bike into rack and socks and shoes on. What would you do differently?: hurry up more buit recurring theme here, carefull movements to keep back happy. Run
Comments: First mile split had some stationary transition time in it but generally a good negative split, started out a little creaky off the bike but loosened up well and felt great by the last mile. Just a little slow. What would you do differently?: train? Post race
Warm down: mountain dew and BSing What limited your ability to perform faster: lack of training in weeks leading up to race, tweaked back to a lesser extent Event comments: really well done race, excellent venue. Last updated: 2012-08-19 12:00 AM

the usual, left house at 5am, arrived just before 5:30. Strained back Saturday morning so spent most of pre-race trying to keep loose and not do anything that causes back to spasm. Spent Saturday night putting on my new crank which arrived a couple days early, took for dark lap around the 'hood about 9pm to make sure Garmin was reading power and shifting was good.
swam 10 minutes, only had to hit the johnies once, I have never seen a longer line than what was there about 30 minutes pre-race.
