Swim
Comments: This was a good swim for me. Swim is normally my weakest leg, and I always finish towards the back of my wave. Although no age-group results available (grrr...) I felt like I was in the middle of my wave, looking at other swim caps. My wife convinced me to go to a boot-camp with her over the last couple months. Although it's very low-key (twice a week at the local High School) I really felt that the conditioning and working on my arms and core strength paid off in the swim Transition 1
Comments: Still have some problems getting wetsuit off. Switched to short (no-show) socks which definitely shaves a few seconds (still not ready to go sock-less, particularly on a beach course with all that sand) What would you do differently?: Get up to full speed on the bike before tightening shoes Bike
Comments: Enjoyed the bike. Got passed by a few, but not many, and was pleasantly surprised by my time. Good tempo up the one hill and passed several people then. What would you do differently?: Push a little harder on the early flats Transition 2
Comments: First part of transition was good - dismount smooth, at the last minute and passed a couple people entering transition area. Then took a little too long (with twinges of cramps) to get running shoes on. What would you do differently?: Not sure - sit down to put shoes on? Run
Comments: Again, I was really happy with my time here. No leg cramps, which is often a problem for me. I didn't check, but it felt like I was faster on the second half, and definitely passed a couple people who had passed me earlier. Cool weather definitely helped - this would be a really hot course if the weather was warmer. Nice breeze on the return leg also. Good to be able to see the whole course in front of you (although it looks like a long way when you start..) What would you do differently?: Not much - this is a good pace for me and I finished with enough for a sprint, but not much left over Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Just getting fitter. That said, this was a good race for me. I had put in some longer bike rides in my training (35-40 miles) which paid off, so keep going with those. I think I'll also continue with the boot-camp or some kind of strength training - I was really surprised what a pay-off that seemed to give me. Event comments: Race was well-organized. Everything seemed a little last minute (finish area was being laid out 30 minutes before race start-time) and we started about 10 minutes late, but not a big deal. Really liked the service which gave you an instant time for the race when you gave them your number. One complaint - why no age group rankings in the results? I really like to see how I compare in each leg against my age-group. It doesn't seem like this would be that difficult to do - even just publish the results in an Excel file and I can sort them myself. But the Cool Runnings site doesn't let you do anything like that. But overall, I liked this race and would do it again. Last updated: 2012-08-19 12:00 AM

Picked up number the day before - although it was a 30-minute drive, nice to have it in hand before. Up at 4.45, cereal for breakfast. Intending to use new continuous blood glucose monitor to monitor blood sugar a bit more closely, so did normal insulin bolus. Worked well - avoided normal pre-race high and used bigger pre-race snack to keep blood sugar consistent through race.
Droven down and parked in a residential street about a mile from race, rather than pay the $15 for beach parking. Easy to ride down with the Xterra backpack and serves as a small warm-up/bike-check.
Ran up the beach and swam a little.
