Overall Rank = 38/123

Age Group Rank = 11/14
Pre-race routine:

Ate a cliff bar and a little bit of cereal around 5-5:30. Then, had another cliff bar around 6:30-7. Then, had a Hammer at about 7:40.
Event warmup:

Took a hot bath to help my muscles limber up right when I woke up. But, I only swam for about 30 meters beforehand.
Swim
  • 32m 31s
  • 750 meters
  • 04m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

From the start I had a really high HR. It was a little choppy and jostling for space with lots of people and I just couldn't get that HR down. It was a really tough swim because of that. I had hoped to do the swim in about 10 minutes less, but after that first 5 minutes I just couldn't get that HR down and it stressed me out a little.
What would you do differently?:

Practice in open water much more, especially to start with a sprint and then tone it down.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No T1 time was provided in the results
What would you do differently?:

Not be so tired in the swim. T1 was good. Tops would have been 2 minutes (I could not get my Tri top on over my chest, that was frustrating).
Bike
  • 41m 51s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 17.78 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 could have been a little better, but I was pretty tired at this point. I was not looking forward to the run.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder, and practice transitions more. I did pretty well, but could have done better.
Run
  • 26m 52s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I run in minimalist-type shoes (New Balance Minimus 2 Cross Trainers). That trail really didn't do my feet any favors. I was expecting people to mis-step and trip or roll an ankle. Not a very nice trail to run on.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

HR too high. I should have just toned it down on the bike to get the HR down and just enjoy the rest of the race, but I didn't.

Event comments:

The last race I did was the Burley Spudman 8 years ago. So, this one was pretty good, as far as I could tell. They were a little late starting, I think the swim course could have been measured more accurately and the organization of the routes for Olympic distance and Sprint distance could have been better planned so we don't crash into each other.

HR was a little high. Had trouble keeping it low.
Suit: XTERRA Vortex
Course: Bouys out in Lake Yuba. I overheard some discussion by athletes later that the distance was much further than 750M. I thought it seemed long, but I was tired and it was my first open water swim in a long time.

I felt pretty good on the bike, HR was a little high (still from swim).
Wind: Little
Course: Course was okay for the most of it, but we turned onto a frontage road along I-15 and I was sure my bike would break apart underneath me with all the pot-holes in the road.

HR was a little high the whole race. I was glad to be done. 3 weeks of training is not enough to do this comfortably.
Course: Run up a steep, rocky, sandy trail to get to the road. There has to be a better way. Anyway, then run on the road for about a mile, then a rocky, bumpy, dusty trail and up a hill then back down for about 1.2 miles. Then, run back on the road and through the entrance to the park and down to the finish line right next to the transition area in the parking lot.
