Pre-race routine:

We all met for dinner the night before the race and worked out some details. That was really nice, will suggest this for all relays I do in the future.

Morning of the race, our swimmer met at my house and we drove down together, our runner met us at the race site.

Went through packet pick-up, split up the numbers & swim cap, got body marked and headed into transition.
Event warmup:

After getting transition set up and going over exchange strategy we split up.

Our swimmer went down to the water for her warm-up.

I brought my second bike and went for a 15-20 minute ride to loosen up the legs.

Our runner went out for his warm-up while I was on the bike leg.
Swim
  • 16m 30s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Transition 1
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

As with my previous relay, we had the person going out bend down and take the timing chip strap off of the person coming in. This seems to work pretty well. 2nd fastest T1 in our division.

Normally I have my shoes clipped in on the bike in T1, but for the relay I wore my bike shoes and rubber banded my left crank arm in place so that as I got to the mount line I could step down on the pedal as I jumped on the bike. Again, this seems to work pretty well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, felt this was a very smooth and efficient T1.

Comments:

GREAT RIDE!!! The warm up really paid off and already having my shoes on saved a ton of time. Felt like I was up to full speed almost immediately. Passed a bunch of people the entire way. I was only passed by one other rider, and he is one of my training partners. Came in hoping to average 21+ and finished at 21.75 MPH. GREAT RIDE!!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except get skinnier, stronger and faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m 28s
Comments:

Fastest T2 in our division! Again, the outgoing runner grabbing the timing strap works great!

Did get yelled at by the volunteers for coming into the dismount area too fast. Funny, I thought this was a RACE! Oh well, had a great dismount and very quick transfer of the timing strap.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, very good T2.
Run
  • 22m 20s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Our runner has hoping to go 18ish, however he wasn't prepared for running in sand. Welcome to a Siesta Key tri! Sand, the great equalizer. Anyway, he did a great job and had nothing left when he crossed the finish line.
Post race
Warm down:

Our swimmer and I went to get food and something to drink, the runner went to stretch and cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight and lack of training.

Event comments:

First race where they served pulled pork sandwiches and grilled chicken. The Sharks put on a great race.

This was my first tri, 4 years ago and I will always have a special place for this event.
