Swim
Comments: No excuses I didn't swim well, I really need to address this weakness. Swam well within myself and maybe that was the problem need to push harder. Garmin had the swim at 1.4 miles but hey that may not be accurate. Swimming is the focus for this off season!! What would you do differently?: More swim training time, swim faster. Transition 1
Comments: Arm coolers dont go on wet arms very easy! Need to figure out how to get these things on faster! Bike
Comments: Bike went well - in hindsight may have upped the intensity a little more but just focussed on keeping my HR from creeping into Z3. Average HR of 146 for the ride which for me is 4-5 BPM below Z3 - given how hot the run was it was probably a good thing i didnt over cook the bike. What would you do differently?: Maybe push slightly harder, probably could have gone 3-4 mins quicker without impacting the run. Transition 2
Comments: good T2, took enough time to spray on some more sunscreen which was well worth it at the end of the day! Run
Comments: For this day given the heat and the bike/run course i feel like my run went well. My time was much slower than expected, and definitely much slower than i could have done on a cooler day. I passed a lot of people on the run and was only passed by 2 people (both in the final 2 miles). I never had to walk which was good because there was a lot of walkers out there! I just tried to get myself into a rythm and run aid station to aid station - i couldnt get enough of those cold sponges! What would you do differently?: Not a lot different - the heat was the deciding factor in this race - on another day i would have easily run under 1.35 but that was a tough day at the office for everyone which is reflected in the over all times for the run. I also managed to get a nasty cold a couple of days before the race so that did bother me a bit on the run and may have slowed me down a touch, although i'd rather not use it as an excuse :-). Post race
Warm down: sitting in the shade with cold water and pop!!! They had a garden hose at the finish line as well so that was nice :-) What limited your ability to perform faster: 1) Heat 2) Swim - that was very poor i had trained enough to at least be around 40m 3) Training method - this year was more of a balanced approach with volume increase accross the board as the plan progressed. Next year i plan on doing blocks of run specific and bike specific training where the other two sports take a much lower volume for those blocks. I plan on doing these blocks far enough out from the A race to be able to finish the training plan with a block of race specific(more balanced) training, along with at least one or two 'big days'. I wouldnt say any of this was really a limiter for this race, as this is only my second year of tri's and i think i used a sensible approach this time around, however next years plan will take a more advanced agressive approach. Event comments: Great event, well organized, tons of aid stations and volunteers, well priced, good tough course that is challenging enough without being over the top. Bagel with peanut butter, half banana, muscle milk, half cup coffee, gu brew. Drove to the race and got there about 45mins before start - checked over everything in transition, went and took care of business and headed down to swim warm up.
