Pre-race routine:

Woke up an hour late in the hotel. Didn't realize traveling from Illinois to Indiana that we were an hour ahead. Set the alarm in the hotel for 4:30, woke up and turned by cell phone on and realized it was actually 5:30. Had to make a rush to the car with all 3 kids still sleeping. Ended up eating a bagel and banana and cup of coffee in the car on the way. When we got to the park people were still racking their bikes but the announcer shortly announced 15 minutes till the close of transition. Just barely enough time to get set up.
Event warmup:

Ended up standing in line for porta potties for about 10 minutes then put on wet suit and got in line for swim wave 7 which was set to go at 7:27.
Swim
  • 50m 28s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Tried to start to the outside and near the back but beginning of swim was still brutal. Ended up taking a left hook to the side of the head knocking off my goggles at the beginning of the swim. Put goggles back on and continued on with swim. Had difficulty sighting especially on the way back to shore. Sun was shining right in our eyes on the swim back. Swim was brutal at times when next swim wave would catch up and attempt to swim over you.
What would you do differently?:

Probably nothing. Swim went pretty well.
Transition 1
  • 05m 18s
Comments:

T1 went well. Long run from water to transition. Had group of wet suit strippers which helped. Ran bike out of transition and across mount line. Mounted bike over to side out of everybody's way.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 3h 21m 46s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.69 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good the first 25 miles. Started getting some cramps in the bottom of my feet after that. Started to get really uncomfortable around mile 50. Back and shoulders were getting really stiff.
What would you do differently?:

Will invest in a tri bike this fall and will get fitting for bike before next year. Also felt like I could have pushed harder on the bike and should have.
Transition 2
  • 08m 11s
Comments:

Bottom of my left foot was really hurting bad in T2. Took extra time to get shoes and socks on and to put sun block on and to use bathroom. Really was hoping to prime myself for a good run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 3h 21m 38s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 15m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where the race completely fell apart for me. Felt good the first mile of the run. Started to fell bad around mile 2. Started to feel worse around mile 3. Not sure if I overhydrated or didn't take in enough calories on the bike but started to feel severe naseau everytime I would attempt to run. Soon was down to running .25 miles at a time then .1 miles at a time.
At times wasn't sure if I was going to be able to finish run. Ended up walking at least 80 percent of the run.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice nutrition better next time. Need to do more long bikes followed up by long runs practicing nutrition along the way. Will possibly look into Infinit nutrition next year.
Post race
Warm down:

Ed, James, and Pat were all waiting for me at the finish line. Ended up running the last .1 mile as hard as I could thru finisher chute. Met my wife and kids and walked down to lake and took swim with my 3 kids to cool off. Felt horrible after race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Think it was nutrition again that got me on the bike and made the run impossible.

Event comments:

Should be happy that I walked away from this race with a PR but am still not satisfied with my 70.3 performance. I know I can run a better half marathon. Need to really work on my nutrition next year. As far as the Ironman brand race, was very impressed with the whole experience. Would definitely pay for an Ironman brand race again. As I sit here 2 days after the race with the soreness and pain fading I am now seriously thinking about either Wisconsin or Louisville for next year.
