Age Group Rank = 11/29
Pre-race routine:

Outmeal and a banana early. Arrived early and chilled. Setup transition, then fretted about it. Set it up again. And again. And again.
Event warmup:

Just stayed quietly within my mind. Panicked a little, but kept telling myself I belong.
Swim
  • 10m 8s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 19s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

Start farther forward. I am a relatively strong swimmer who got behind slower swimmers. Increase confidence and move toward the front. As swimmer #29 overall, I was in top 10% of this race, so I would have moved ahead.
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Nothing fancy here, as I am learning. Walked the bike through transition, partly to remain stable in shoes and partly to keep myself calm.
What would you do differently?:

Move a little faster with the bike, and perhaps practice mounting.

What would you do differently?:

Run a little here too. And have my shoes more prepared. Still learning!

Event comments:

Great small-town race. Very friendly, all kinds, all shapes, all abilities welcome. Great to see, and lots of first-time triathletes, which is great! Excellent place to learn and be challenged without feeling overwhelmed in the crucible.

Course: Strange swim, so my time is very overstated. 150m in one pool, then a 1min+ jog/walk up a hill to a second pool for a 250m snake swim. The swim start off a water slide, transit time in between, the requirement to walk to avoid slipping, the constant arrival at a wall, and the narrow course meant I was slowed more so than I otherwise would be. 72F in the first pool; 86F in the second - bathtub! But it was all for fun and practice, so I'm not worrying about the swim time. I came, I saw, I learned.

Course: Hilly course! And I must be strong on hills. King of the Mountain competition near the start: 2nd in age group and 16th among men and overall. (No women beat me up the first hill.) As for the rest of the course, I need to learn to improve my speed. I feel more and more confident, but still may be too tentative on the bike.
