Pre-race routine:

woke up at 2:45. had some bread, soy milk and chia seeds. arrive at the park at 5:00am. it's amazing, the amount of time i had to setup i still forgot to put on body glide, but it didnt affect my T1 time.
Event warmup:

i was really dreading swimming in the hudson, but from what i understand this is a protected part of the beach. this part of the river actually feels better than the naversink. anyway, warmup consisted of swimming maybe 30 yards out and back and stretching a little here and there. had to guess on the water temp. felt really good so i listed 75 degrees
Swim
  • 34h 03m
  • 2112 yards
  • 1h 36m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

im going out on a limb here. the swim didnt feel like it was 1.2 miles. im shocked that i took off 15 mins off my 1.2 swim time. maybe there was a current on the way back. btw, they had some type of blue light on a boat to sight on. on the way back. i made the mistake because i sighted on the blue light and actually went off course..lol.
What would you do differently?:

nothing really.
Transition 1
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

t1 was great. took 20 secs off my personal best. anything under 3 mins and im really happy with. got in my shoes and took off w/o much hassle.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 3h 26m 6s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.30 mile/hr
Comments:

overall climbing is about 4000 ft. about 53 miles of this course either went up or down. there is one section where you can hit 40-45 miles (twice.
i know the profile states that there's one cat 5 hill(twice), but, it felt like there were at least two other cat 5 hills that we had to climb
What would you do differently?:

i have to do more hills. if the course states there's a X number of feet of climbing. i have to do that much at a minimum
Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

i got stung by a bee(will comment further below) as i was coming out of T2. the bee must have been in my cap because it landed on top of my eye lid and i went to swipe at it and i got stung. otherwise, t2 went really well. should have been faster, but im happy
What would you do differently?:

nothing really. btw, i took my feet out of my shoes way too early..lol. im talking at least 2 miles before i had to. i had to place my foot back in my shoe.

Run
  • 2h 15m 35s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

this is one crazy run course. i thought quassy, musselman and mightyman were no joke, but this takes the cake. i have to say though that coming off the bike, my legs felt great and i didnt cramp at all either which was very surprising. im wondering if the pain in my eye diverted the pain i should have felt in my legs. :)
What would you do differently?:

i live in NYC and my recommendation is to run harlem hill in reverse order for 10-11 laps to prepare.
Post race
Warm down:

went to medical to check my eye out and they said im fine and either i would have the biggest swelling in the world or i wouldnt be alive right now..lol

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing really, it's within my HIM pace

Event comments:

this event is 98% fantastic. here are my two minor complaints. what the hell is up with the BEES!!!! there's just too many and i wanted out of there the second i saw one. my only minor(and it's not a big deal) complain. it's more of a wish. bags of ice to carry in between aid stations would be cool. so if you dont care for bees and want a challenging course. this is for you.

Course: this is the toughest run course that i have ever run. up/down/up/down. the only flat part was in the first mile and when we ran across the dam. by the way, if you do the golden apple century, i believe, you cross the same dam. so if you like running hills after 57.2 miles of swim/run then i recommended this half marathon. each aid station had water/gatorade/gel. some had electolyte and soda.
