Swim
Comments: Drafted a lot, which is not something I usually do. It was a really rough swim but I got through it. It is a shallow tide pool area, and when my hand hit sand I got up to run, so this includes about 100m of running in thigh-deep water...slooowwww. What would you do differently?: Swim further into the finish, don't try to run in this. I seeded myself in the second row on the outside like I usually do and missed a lot of opportunities to hang on to better/faster swimmers. I need to start just swimming in the middle of the pack. Transition 1
Comments: This includes a quarter mile run through muddy grass. I did "run" the whole thing, but what a pain in the butt. What would you do differently?: Nothing. It's a crappy set up but it's the best they can do. T-area is actually closer to the water than it used to be! Bike
Comments: Super proud of this ride. Just settled into a nice hard level of effort and pedaled away. The first half I was mostly catching my breath from the swim, but the second half, I was cruising and taking in water to get ready to run. What would you do differently?: Bike handling only really mattered at the turnaround, which I would have been OK with but got held up by worse riders. Coming into the finish was bad, a hard right and I just couldn't do it with any speed at all. Need to work on that. Transition 2
Comments: Walked the bike into transition, I just could not run at that point. And I was reallly far back in the t-area, terrible rack position. So I walked. What would you do differently?: I need to get better at dismounting. Also, should have run. Run
Comments: Slow and steady, just made myself keep moving. Since it's an out and back, I got to see everyone I knew that was racing, which is cool. Met a stray doggie too, if I hadn't been in the middle of a race, I would have tried to get him home. Had a little bit left in me and sprinted down the finishing chute, which felt great. What would you do differently?: Nothing. This was the best I could have done this run on this day. I'm very happy with this. Post race
Warm down: Got a gatorade. Yeah, that's it. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. Didn't do much, but I really believe I ran the very best race I could have today. The weather was perfect and I had a great time. Event comments: I love doing this race. It's close to home, it's flat and fast, and it's friendly. Two things (since I know setup reads these! and appreciate that!) 1. bring back the u-shape swim. That triangle was a beast. 2. traffic issues...i have no suggestions and the volunteers and police were WONDERFUL, BUT there were just some issues with us being on a narrow 2-lane road, once their was some bike volume in both directions and car volume in 2 directions, lots of riding on the wrong side of the road and stuff....something to look into, i guess?
