Swim
Comments: Felt very good in the swim, managed almost a minute faster than any of my training sessions. Due to lack of organization by the RD very few people started in order which led to congestion in the pool. Passing was very difficult and the person in front of me swam on the left side of the lane the whole time and with even slower swimmers on the right I was never able to get around him. What would you do differently?: I would enter a faster estimated swim time at sign up and hope that the RD does a better job of starting people in order. I also need to train harder. Transition 1
Comments: I practiced this transition a few times at home but did it dry so it was tougher to get my socks on than I had expected. Almost knocked the rack down pulling my bike off. What would you do differently?: Practice transitions more and more closely replicate race conditions. Also I would like to be able to get on the bike before putting shoes on in my next race. Bike
Comments: Pulled out of transition much colder than I had expected to be but after about 2 miles I had mostly warmed up. Focused on keeping cadence high especially while climbing. I was able to do the bike much quicker and easier than any of my training rides and felt like maybe I should have pushed a little harder on the way back. What would you do differently?: I need to train with my aero bars more so that I feel more comfortable with them. I would push harder on the way back, I knew that the run is not a strong portion of the race for me so I could have shaved some time off by pushing harder on the bike, I don't think it would have effected my run much. Transition 2
Comments: Almost knocked the rack over putting the bike up and felt a little lost since I had not practiced T2 at all before the race. I did well enough though and grabbed some fluids on the way out of transition. What would you do differently?: Practice ahead of time. Run
Comments: I knew this was going to be the most difficult portion of the race for me and it was. I tried to pace myself early and work on intervals of running and walking but found that difficult and ended up running more in the first mile than I had planned, this led to some lower leg muscle cramps that took a while to run through. I really focused on a forefoot strike and trying to keep a quick cadence. My pace was not what I had hoped for but I still matched my quickest training run. What would you do differently?: Train more. I also need to get some new shoes. Post race
Warm down: I didn't do anything to warm-down. Just took pictures with my wife and had some pancakes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training, I just need to keep pushing myself during training. This was my first race so I can only get better now! Event comments: This was my first race so I have very little to compare it to. I have been to another race which was my wife's first race and then seemed much more organized when it came to the swim start. The course was well marked and the had plenty of volunteers the only issue I had was the swim start. Last updated: 2012-09-11 12:00 AM

Breakfast:
2 pieces of toast with peanut butter and honey

Swam 50 yards almost half an hour before the start. Did some stretching in line. Didn't have much of an opportunity for a warm up because I would have cooled down while waiting in line to start.
