Pre-race routine:

Up at 5, bit of toast cup of tea. Not feeling great, still have remnants of a cold. It is at this sort of time that you wonder why it was ever a good idea to sign up for these things. Go over my gear, as my night before preparation was a bit patchy. Set off, then have to drive back as had forgotten bottle for the bicycle. Set off again and get to race site a bit before 7. Set up then sit around gradually getting colder, really is Fall now.
Event warmup:

a bit of stretching, a quick look at the run course.
Swim
  • 05m 17s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

Led off my wave, so nobody ahead of me in the pool which was good. Absolutely rocketed off, and had to pull myself back or risk a blowout. Have not done enough time in the pool, but over such a short distance felt really good and was just getting into my stroke when got to the end.
What would you do differently?:

nothing really, all went fine.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

no T1 time, which was odd as they had the chip marker thing, just added on to my bike time.
What would you do differently?:

went for Yankz laces which actually worked very well. Also had a new pair of Asics, only problem was they did not fit well into the foot cage on the pedals so wasted a few seconds adjsuting, otherwise went okay I think.
Bike
  • 40m 54s
  • 11 miles
  • 16.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Did this race 2 years ago and had not remembered this many hills. Was really quite brutal. The whole first long stretch along the main road was into what felt like quite a strong headwind, was rather unpleasant and tough.

2nd half was better as was more sheltered or had a tailwind, but overall was not the nest ride. Was really thinking that I would be closer to 20mph, but not even close.
What would you do differently?:

more hill training, need to get some aero bars which would have made a difference riding into the wind.
Transition 2
  • 00m 33s
Comments:

went fine, jumped off, helmet off and off onto run! ranked 10th overall for this transition
Run
  • 29m 6s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

my run has always been slow. I went for a slightly different tactic which was to try and run at a good pace and run freely so was doing 8.30 min/miles but problem is maintaining it, so did do some walking especially up the hills. Overall though, the running was more enjoyable then plodding along barely faster than a walk, and my overall time was also much faster than last tri. I need to keep at it and shoot for 25mins/5k next season.
