Pre-race routine:

At a very simple dinner the night before, some lean meat and potatoes and that plenty of water.

Woke up at 4:30 on race day and started hydrating. At 2 eggs, a pork chop and a few big handfuls of carrots. Drank about 24 oz of Powerade to get some more sugar in me.

Was nice not having to travel and hour + to a race, just across the river so I had plenty of time to take care of business at home. Got to the race site, set up transition and did some more business.
Event warmup:

Some easy jogging to acclimatize to the cold temps as best I could. Did some active stretching and some strides and got my run gear together.

Comments:

Went off in waves of 50. Caught up to some slower runners from the previous wave pretty easily. It was a narrow path along the river for the first 1/4 mile, so passing was somewhat difficult. Pace was good and comfortable. The trail segment near the 2 mile mark was somewhat unexpected.

Bike

Comments:

Went out on the bike strong and was able to pass a lot of people. Once I got through town and out on the highway I settled down and into a good pace. Once off the main road the surface got rough with some deep cracks. The zip ties on my torpedo mounted bottle cage kept slapping against my aerobars and I thought it might eventually come off. The surface was pretty tough on my nether regions, but once I made the turnaround the road surface was a bit smoother.

Missed a turn about mile 22 despite a police officer and a course martial stopping oncoming traffic and waving an orange flag. Only went about 200 yards and turned around.

Lower back hurt quite a bit in the aero position near the end of the bike, tried to stay down as much as I could. Wind gusts were mainly from the side, so wasn't too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Work on core strength to say more comfortable in the aero position.

Get better used to get a bottle in and out of the torpedo mount while down in the aero position.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Remembered my flying dismount when it was too late.
What would you do differently?:

Go over the impending transition in my head while still on the course.
Run

Comments:

Calves started to cramp up and little bit about 200 yards out of transition. Dialed it back a little and tried to bring my breathing under control. Pushed on and the cramping thankfully went away until after the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate more on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking, warm shower at home.

Event comments:

Over all a good experience. Thought the bike course was a little on the long side and favored strong cyclists. Stayed decently warm on the course despite the temps and the wind.
