Pre-race routine:

I woke up several times during the night to check the clock and make sure I
had not over slept. I finally got up at 4 am and woke my wife and son. I felt very prepared for this even though it was my first marathon. The one hour drive to Portland went by very fast, and the next thing you know they were dropping me off at the start and heading off to meet my aunt(Boston marathon alumni) to do some serious cheering.
Event warmup:

Stood in the very long porta potty lines, and thought about how lucky I was to be able to run a marathon. If you told me four years ago that I would be here, I would'nt believe it since I had been very inactive for most of my adult life.

Comments:

The run was awsome! I saw my family at mile five, which was a wonderful feeling. I got emotional several times when I would see people with pictures of loved ones battling cancer or pictures of fallen soldiers on their shirts. The thought of how these people must feel made the minor discomfort I was feeling really seem small in comparison. Mile twelve was another chance to see my family, and I was feeling good! The next seven miles were just a nice chance to reflect back on how far physically I have come in the last four years. My dad and step mom were waiting for me at mile nineteen, another huge pick me up. The next three miles were through the neighborhood I grew up in, and it was so cool to see all of the people cheering. I really started to suffer the last couple of miles, but I think I just got a little behind on my gels. My family was waiting for me about two blocks from the finish, and my son ran with me for about a block. I was so proud of the example I set for him that day, and I am on my way to becoming an Ironman!
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing!
Post race
Warm down:

I just drank some chocolate milk, and laid down for a minute. I collected all of the cool finisher swag then headed out to meet my family.

Event comments:

Wonderful volunteers and lots of community support.
