Pre-race routine:

Woke up early, showered. Had some coffee and half a banana for breakfast. Left on time, amazingly!

We got to the race just a bit after transition opened and it felt like we had a lot of time before the race. I was glad we were there early though since it was open racking and I was able to get a good spot.
Event warmup:

No warm up. It was too cold to get into the water and my running shoes were back up in transition.
Swim
  • 09m 29s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt like I had a bad swim but this was my best time so far.
What would you do differently?:

Once again, just need more OWS practice.
Transition 1
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Had a good strong transition. Ran from the swim to the bike and definitely that helped. Grass all over my feet but it didn't bother me on the bike.

Fastest T1
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it was a good T1
Bike
  • 57m 19s
  • 15 miles
  • 15.70 mile/hr
Comments:

The country roads though were beautiful. Lots of cows for company. Since the course was roughly a rectangle though, the wind came at you from three sides. Unfortunately, the tail wind was at the beginning and the head wind was at the end. Not ideal.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. I could have maybe pushed a bit harder in the headwinds portion but I was just more focused on putting my head down and getting the job done than making incremental pushes.

I had hoped (and know I could have) to have a higher average speed but overall I was pleased with the bike as I had plenty left over for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

T2 took a little longer because I didn't have yankz in these shoes and my fingers were too cold to tie my laces quickly. I did like the fact that transition was in the grass - made running with the bike a lot easier.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to get another pair of laces
Run
  • 28m 40s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

What a great run. I was so cold I couldn't tell if anything was hurting so I just kept running. Not a bad problem to have I suppose! Opted not to take any water and passed a girl in my AG at the water station.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, the run went perfectly
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my longest tri (longest swim & bike) so really, I didn't push quite as hard as I could have on the bike because I just didn't want to have a bad run. In retrospect, I could have pushed a bit harder and had enough left for the run, but hindsight is always 20/20. I really couldn't have asked for a better race without drastically changing my abilities.

Event comments:

For a second year race, it was good. Organized and on time - the two best things! I don't like open racking transitions but oh well. The thing that could use the most improvement was signage. Bike signage was not good at all and there were no mile markers on the run course. There might have been more signs and the wind blew them down, but of course, that's not helpful either.

I heard a lot of people had bad races and I can see where that was possible. I had a good race though and am very pleased with how I did.

Course: The course was both awful and great. We were riding on the shoulders of some busy roads that were not closed to traffic so that was a little uncomfortable. Signs were poorly (or not at all placed.) Thankfully since my AG was next to last to go I had a lot of riders to follow. Heard some of the lead guys missed a turn.
