Run
Comments: I could not have hoped for a better race than today! I PR'd the course by about 8 minutes over last year with a solid negative split. I was hoping to break 1:30 today and went well under that. Positive mental dialog helped quite a bit today. It was crazy cold at the start, 28F, not bad racing conditions once you get going, not so good again once you stop. I only hit three water stations today, way less than usual but did not feel any ill effect. Ate one Gu at about mile 6, shortly after getting onto Summit Avenue. Had a bit of a downer around mile 4-5, saw another runner down on the bike path getting chest compressions and assisted breathing. Not good, I need to check on that, it really hit home with me unlike ever before, I couldn't shake the feeling that he, like myself, probably considered himself in darn good shape, maybe even has a family, and look what can happen! The crowds were great as usual today, but I chose to run with my headphones on in my own zone. In fact, I realized after the race that I was so focused on my effort and forward progress that I didn't even take in the fall colors. The community support and volunteerism for this race in amazing, unlike any other race I've ever done. What would you do differently?: I got too social with a runner during the 3rd mile (they had a tri shirt from a local race) and ran about 20 seconds slower than I was hoping during that split. It's downhill and should have been one of my faster miles. Otherwise everything went real well and my race was about as good as I could hope for. Post race
Warm down: Walked through the food alley and drank some Powerade and a cup of soup broth. Quickly got slightly hypothermic and had to be "handled" when I tried to get a massage because I shaking uncontrollably. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing, this was a darn near perfect race for me. Event comments: Great race today, super fun event, no wonder it's only a lottery entry and so hard to get in! Last updated: 2012-10-07 12:00 AM

Walked the half mile over to the race start from the hotel then waited in a parking ramp lobby to stay warm about a block from my corral. Ate one clif bar upon waking up along with gatorade. Ate one Gu about 10 minutes prior to race start.
Walk to the start and stretching a little while trying to keep warm. I'm using the first mile of these mid-distance events as a "warm-up" as well, trying not to go out too fast. So for example while today's overall pace was 8:39, my first mile was 9:22.
