Swim
Comments: I still need to learn how to swim but am slowly starting to feel less panic in open water. There has been some improvement but nowhere near enough. What would you do differently?: Learn how to swim. Transition 1
Comments: I love wetsuit strippers! Again, the new wetsuit seemed to get stuck on my elbows more than anything. Other than the crushing feeling I always get upon entering T1 and seeing a lack of bikes there this went well. Bike
Comments: Ranks include Swim+Bike This is where I usually make up most of my time and this is where the day got away from me. I was feeling REALLY good on this course. I LOVE the hills in the first half and felt that I was doing well speed wise. Becasue of the cold I wasn't hydrating/consuming enough and knew it but wasn't overly concerned. On Highway 8 coming back into the city I was flying along when the group of racers infront of me got tangled up together and crashed. I have never seen anything like it. The one person seemed to fly through the air and land in the middle of the highway. Most of them got back up again, some to continue riding, some holding body parts but the one person didn't move. A few of us stopped. One man pulled over a passing car and before you knew it there was paramedics and police on the way. I spoke with one man whose arm/collar bone were most likely broken but what upset the most was the one racer laying there not moving. As soon as the emergency crews got there we were only in the way and continued on. Looking at my watch it was only about 5mins but felt like an eternity... The rest of the ride back was mentally destroying. I couldn't stop shaking and just wanted to see my family. I figured when I got to T2 I would just call it a day and head home safe and warm. Transition 2
Comments: When I got to T2 I saw my family cheering for me. I looked at my watch and realized I was well on my way to a PB and decided to finish. I have never DNF'ed and decided that race wouldn't be my first. Run
Comments: Ranking includes Swim+Bike+Run I felt okay for the first 15km and then developed some familiar stomach issues. Two stops at various porta-johns did nothing to help my last run split. What would you do differently?: NEED more run strength. HILL TRAINING and BRICKS are your friends... Post race
Warm down: Finally I got to just grab my husband and feel warm again... I spoke with him about what happened out on the bike course and was just upset thinking about the injured racers and wondering how their families were... hoping they weren't waiting there to cheer and worrying. I love that my whole family was there. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of run strength and a general inability to swim. Event comments: This was a miracle that they even pulled this one off. With the flooding this year the swim/bike portions of the race were totally re-organized in the month leading up to it... and it was amazing! I will continue to do this race year after year. This is a great venue as it is fairly close to me and some of my family came along!
This race was different than others. Becasue I managed to get a Vegas slot in Boise this was more a "fun local race" and less of a "need to prove something" race...
We did get there a little later than I would have liked due to a vehicle fire on the highway and an unexpected detour but it all worked out in the end.
My warm-up consisted of squashing myself into my wetsuit while they sang the national anthem... could have used some more time here.
