Swim
Comments: Good swim - had a good line, not much contact, felt strong. I was right up to the buoys the whole way around, so very efficient. Never got the tight chest I sometimes get after the first few hundred yards. Little did I know, this was going to be the highlight of the day! What would you do differently?: Nothing big - very pleased. I should probably wear tinted goggles when the sun is so bright - I had some trouble siting the bouys when the sun was in my face. Transition 1
Comments: Everything went well - no complaints. Got the suit off cleanly, no calf cramping. What would you do differently?: Faster? Bike
Comments: Not a good segment for me - lost a lot of ground in my age group - got passed by a lot of 45-49er's. It was very tough for sure - I tried to just spin up the hills, which made it very slow, but I knew I had to save my legs. The heat and sun were tough, but I forced the gatorade (3 bottles) and GU (4 GUs). Used water mainly for dumping on my head to cool down. I still dont see why I am still so slow - I did more work this year than ever. What would you do differently?: More training for sure - cant miss those longer rides on the weekends. Also need to find a better nutrition plan than GU and Gatorade - that will not sustain me for IMLP. Transition 2
Comments: Other than the dread of the run making me scared to leave the corral, it was fine. What would you do differently?: Forgot my speed laces- may have cost me the race - Ha. Run
Comments: By the time I hit the run, it was hot as a mutha-f***a out there. Part of it because I was slow on the bike, but part because I didnt get to start until 7:45am!! I was doing alot of shuffling, but kept it going throughout the race, except for walking through the stops to make sure I got enough water and gatorade. Used ice down front and back also, which seemed to help. I passed more than got passed on this and was proud that I kept an actual run going. Mental attitude was good - stayed focused when I could have easily wandered into a bad place, given my time and the heat. I was disappointed when I realized I would not break 6 hours, but got over it quickly and stayed on task. A good exercise in making the best of a bad situation. What would you do differently?: Run FASTER! Need to increase mileage signficantly. Post race
Warm down: Cold towel over the head was great - wish I could have dunked in the ice water! Really needed a shady spot to sit down, but there were none to be found. Also needed access to more water - could not choke down another gatorade - needed ice water or something else cold. Wandered a bit and leaned on a railing in the shade then gave up and went to transition to pack and change into dry clothes. Came back down for some food, but I was not really ready for it - did not feel very well. Eventually ate a burger and had some soda then briefly looked around for people I knew - didnt find anyone, so went home and hit the pool. What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat and sun made for a very difficult day. I was trying for a 540 and finished 609 - others that I know had similar misses of their goals. Not sure if you can do anything about such a hot day, other than more training. I do need to improve my nutrition plan for sure to deal with a IM. Event comments: Rev3 does a great job - thats the bottom line. Organized and professional for sure. But of course, I can complain about a couple of things: 45-49 having to wait for an hour on the beach to start at 745 - not happy - longer time during run in the sun, etc. Very limited shaded seats at the finish - I needed a seat in the shade but could not find one anywhere. Found my self competing for seats, drinks, etc. with hundreds of non-racers - not just family members, but people from the park I think. Would be nice to have some space and a chance to get a cold drink before someone's kid gets their 15th soda and the ice runs out. The finisher medal almost knocked me over it is so large and heavy - a bit ridiculous. The finisher shirt used to be a tech jersey - now a thin cotton T (mine had holes). The swagbag has reduced as well - used to get goggles and/or a nice T-Shirt. Now a baby-blue visor??? Wont be wearing that. Ok, enough negaitve - it was a well done event. Volunteers were great and enthusiastic. I will continue to do their races - hope to get to another venue one of these days. Old Orchard? Costa Rica? Last updated: 2012-10-14 12:00 AM

Got up at 330am, made coffee and did final checks of stuff. Easy drive to Quassy - arrived just before 5am - good parking spot. Ate PB on bagel, drank coffee and water along the way, had a few Cheerios also. Got set up quickly - I had an end spot for the first time ever, so plenty of space. Mistakes: forgot my G1 drink, forgot sunscreen (bad mistake!), forgot bodyglide. In hindsight, should have done a tri before this just to get the routine back in my head.
My wave is last again, so not going off until 745am. Had some leaisurely swims just to re-acclimate to wetsuit - this was my first open water of the year. Suit felt tight - should have lost the weight I promised to lose. Then stood on the shore for an hour waiting for my turn.
