Swim
Comments: I wasn't expecting to have a real fast swim so I started at the back of my wave. Kept passing people and felt like I got into a real good rythem. Didn't really push it....just a good solid effort. What would you do differently?: Start at the front of the wave and push a little harder. Transition 1
Comments: No idea what I was thinking/doing. I took forever in T1. Just took my sweet time doing everything. SAt down, wiped my feet off, neatly put wet suit into bag. WHAT WAS I DOING?!?! Had no idea that my swim was so good or I would have pushed it. What would you do differently?: Run instead of slow jog to bike and cut out at least 30 seconds at the bike. Bike
Comments: This was my first half, so I took it easy on the bike. Was averaging 18.8 at 40 miles and decided to back off some. My goal was 18mph, so I hit it about right. What would you do differently?: Purchase a tribike and get it fit properly. I'm riding a Specialized Allez road bike with PD bars and I know my aero position is terrible. Transition 2
Comments: I checked my overall time coming into T2 and realized that I was 30 minutes under my projected time. This got me moving through T2. Had trouble getting around some slower folks in the narrow chutes and ran over some fool who was changing in the area where the bags were hung up instead of in the change tent. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Started out great!! Got my running legs after the first mile and hit the 6 mile mark in 61:xx. Visions of a sub-6 danced in my head!! Opened my second Gu at about 6.5 miles and tried to take it. I stopped dead in my tracks and was bent over with dry heaves. Tried to drink some HEED at the next aid station and it came back up. From that point on, all I could hold down was water. Slowed down to a 11:00 pace until the 8 mile mark and then the wheels came completely off. What would you do differently?: ?????? Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Unable to take in nutrition after the 6 mile mark on the run. Event comments: I REALLY wish that a sports drink other than HEED was available at the aid stations. HEED has to be the nastiest drink on the market. Also, Set-Up needs to make the chutes and area where the bags were hung-up in T2 twice as wide. Could not get around people who were walking. Overall, this is a fantastic event. Woke up at 5:30. Bagel w/peanut butter and a glass of gatorade. Walked to T1 and layed out everything. Went back to room, took care of business, then walked to the start.
This was my 1st HIM, so I was very anxious to get started.
