2006 Danskin Women's Triathlon
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 39m 3s
Overall Rank = 50/619
Age Group = 40-45
Age Group Rank = 4/53
Pre-race routine:

light breakfast (oatmeal and apricot)
Event warmup:

1/4 mile walk from parking area to transition area. Short swim.
Swim
  • 14m 11s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

didn't really need a wetsuit, but it didn't hurt. I was in the first wave which was good because there was little traffic out of the start. Water visibility was poor. Swimming into the sun made it hard to see bouys.

Got stressed because we arrived at the event later than planned and I didn't feel like my set-up was perfect.
What would you do differently?:

Relax - Don't hyperventilate! I was a little "keyed up" and it took a while to settle down.
Transition 1
  • 04m 20s
Comments:

Swim exit to transition area was at least 150 yards (uphill and over pavement/concrete) and my area was at the far end of the bike exit. First time with a wetsuit, but everything went well from that standpoint.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I could do, due to the way the transition area was arranged and the distance from the lake to the bike.
Bike
  • 52m 23s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 15.00 mile/hr
Comments:

first lap was great - NO TRAFFIC since I was in the first wave. Second lap I had to contend with the later waves and many tri-newbies.

What would you do differently?:

Got to get faster on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Took a little extra time to get a drink due to the hot tempurature.
Run
  • 26m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Course was fine, but air temp was VERY warm by that point. 1 water station about 1/4 mile from the turnaround. Race organizers marked course to have runners return on wrong side of course after turnaround which made for some interesting games of "chicken" with outbound runners. Course well marked.
What would you do differently?:

? My heart rate was up pretty high at that point.
Post race
Warm down:

walk around. massage. Lots of water and light amount of food.

Event comments:

I think the very warm weather worked to my advantage. I perform much better in the heat. Carpooled to the event which realieved a lot of stress and made for a very FUN weekend. Race organizers should have had 2 cashiers available to take parking money to reduce the wait to get into the park or offered pre-race parking passes.

Great atmosphere.
