Run
Comments: I think I went out too hard, but otherwise it was a good run. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I'm pretty satisfied. Transition 1
Comments: I'm always slow at T1 during a triathlon, and it looks to be true in a duathlon as well. I take too long getting on road shoes and gloves, but I really don't care. I'd rather have the comfort of the road shoes and the protection of the gloves if I crash. What would you do differently?: Move faster. Bike
Comments: GOT A FLAT TIRE!!!! GRRRRR!! Near the end of the loop there is a windy, short but steep hill. On the 2nd lap, as I crested the hill, my front tire blew. Very frustrating! What a momentum buster. Up until that point, I was fairly pleased with my effort on the bike. I wasn't having a record day, but was enjoying quite a solid ride. It took me just over 8:00 minutes to get the tire swapped and get back on the bike. Without the tire fiasco, my pace would bump to ~21.3MPH, which would have boosted me up in overall bike rankings to within the top 175, and my overall place up over 100 spots. Ouch. What would you do differently?: Not get a flat. I am glad this happened during a this race, rather than a true triathlon, but still it's frustrating watching all the bikers fly by as I'm fumbling to get the tire back on the rim. Transition 2
Comments: Good T2. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: As I've experienced in every race, my running suffers off the bike. I did OK in this one, but I need to work on this issue. What would you do differently?: Include more frequent bricks. Post race
Warm down: Walked around. What limited your ability to perform faster: FLAT TIRE!! I want those 8 minutes back! Also, possibly because of the hilly nature of the course, I didn't drink enough on the bike. I should have gone through 2 bottles, but I barely finished 1. That may have affected my run at the end. Overall, if I look at my performance sans the pit stop tire change, my performance was pretty good for me. Looking forward to my next chance to race at the NYC Triathlon. Event comments: Race organizers were really at the mercy of Mother Nature--who had no mercy. It poored with rain during the sprint race a day earlier, and that same rain led to cancelling the swim for this race. They handled the situation very well, and the duathlon went off without a hitch. I'll definitely be back next year. Last updated: 2006-06-05 12:00 AM

There were torrential rainstorms the day prior to the race, which I anticipated would lead to cancelling the swim--we were also told the during the pre-race meeting on Saturday that water temp was 78F, making it a wetsuit illegal race. So the night before the race was spent wondering what was to come in the morning. I hoped that with the rain--if the river was safe for swimming--that the water temps would have fallen below 78F.
Woke up at 3:20, showered, had a bagel w/peanut butter, loaded up the car and proceeded to the race site with my brother-in-law. Got to the race site just before 5am, got body marked and went to set up the transition area. Around 6am they announced that the water was at 80F--no wetsuits. I wasn't thrilled about that! Then 15-20 minutes later they announced that the river was not safe for swimming due to heavy floating debri (which was easily confirmed by watching the logs and branches floating down the river). Now I'm doing my first duathlon. This will be interesting!
Race officials decided to run a duathlon as follows: 5K run, 40K bike, 10K run.
No real warm-up. I figured I'd use the first part of the 5K fo that purpose.
