Swim
Comments: I had a plan before I started, and that was not red line my heart rate. Which is exactly what I did , swam really quick for me, straight out of the blocks. The first buoy rounding was a nightmere. People swimming on top of each other. The second buoy was good, but I was struggling to get my heart rate down although I was swimming well. Near the end of the swim I passed a lot of people, was swimming high in the water, long strokes and was hitting a good rhythm. Stood up to early, and had that horrible feeling , oh no nbo sand beneath my feet. Struggled out of the water feeling spent to be honest. What would you do differently?: I don't know, maybe swim a bit slower , but I don't think it affected my overal time. Transition 1
Comments: No time for T1 or T2. These times are in the bike, at a guess 1:40 for T1. maybe a mintue for t2. I felt really dis orientated out of the water, and struggled. Was dissy and struggled for balance and concentration on what I was doing. Had really problems with shoes and i may look at a one strap tri shoe instead of 2 strap one. What would you do differently?: More T1 practice, more swim bike bricks. Bike
Comments: I bike well, once I sorted the shoes and picked a pace. This is a real up and down course, with constant rollers. I'm a good seated climber and caught a lot of people on the ups, then rest on the downhill, soft pedling. Cycled hard into the wind using my drops. I've trained a lot in the wind so I felt really comfortable. At the turn around had the wind behind me , still pushed really hard on the up hill , easy on the downhills. About three KM's out I slowed down, got my heart rate down for transition and the run. Out of shoes really early. It was a good ride all up and very happy with it. Note: lots of drafting by people on the bike. Gets a bit annoying. What would you do differently?: Not much Transition 2
Comments: Missed rack and struggled to find my spot. What would you do differently?: Check where my spot is from the bike finish , didn't do this. Run
Comments: I have a injury, so I wasn't looking forward to the run. Stuggled a bit on first loop. Then seem to run better on the second. Concentrated on my run form rather than my pace, what I've found is that if I concentrate on keeping my hips high and running tall I run a lot more efficently. All and all I think a ran really well. What would you do differently?: Not much. Post race
Warm down: Had a muffin, some water and another coffee. Walked around a bit and a look at the stalls selling stuff. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of run training due to injury. A Really nice TT bike :) Event comments: Good race , will do it next year as well. Last updated: 2012-10-28 12:00 AM

This is my first tri in about 6 years and I was really using it as a warm up for my 70.3 in January.
I was still looking forward to this one but I had an injury, plus I was a bit nervous, similiar feeling before my first tri.
Woke up at around 5:30 am, lay in bed listening to the wind thinking I would skip this race. I have an injury as well, which has stopped a lot of run training.
Finally got up at 6:00 am, had breakfast of rolled oats and fruit. Gathered up the rest of my gear and packed the car. I spent a lot of time thinking about what I would wear due to the weather conditions, it would be cold, but could have warmed up during the race.
Final check that I had everything that I needed.
It's a 50 km drive to Maraetai, had plenty of time so didn't hurry.
Parked car, took bike to transition , then registered. Spoke to the guy next to me , he had a brand new Specialised transition, found out it was his first tri, wow. Nice bike.
Spoke to a couple of people I knew, drank a litre of water, had a coffee. Waited for the start of the race.
Checked my transition set-up, consisted of race belt , cap , sunglasses, shoes , bike and helmet.
Went down to the start 20 minutes before the start time. Went for a swim , focusing on technique the a quick run. I didn't feel that good, not a 100%.
Then spent some time thinking about were I would swim, tactics, speed extra.
