Pre-race routine:

Two transition race, swim and T1 18 miles out of town on a windy road. Awesome friends dropped us off, saving us hours on parking and shuttle busses. Still, out of the hotel at 5:15 am. Pepsi, power bar, lots of water, multiple imodiums, good to go.
Event warmup:

Issue with bike racking in T1, thanks to Johanne for keeping me calm, and the marshall for backing me up. That pretty much got my heart rate as high as it needed to be. For the record, I NEVER moved her bike, and woud NEVER touch another persons bike or gear. EVER.
Swim
  • 38m 42s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Validated my decision to not spend much time training for the swim! HA! Only added 1 minute to my 2011 time, when I trained HARD. May have been the new wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Avoid the guy in the silver cap.
Transition 1
  • 05m 41s
Comments:

HA! Muddy mess in T1, had tucked my gear in tightly because of worries about my rack-mates, couldn't find my friend who was supposed to take my bag... not sure what happened to other 2 minutes!
What would you do differently?:

Move faster? Still think it was a good idea to pack my glasses/stuff away, but it cost me time. Other people's stuff was knocked around.
Bike
  • 2h 59m 29s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.67 mile/hr
Comments:

Got stopped by a marshall who wanted to warn me that my tire was low. I knew it was a bit low - intentionally for the horrid road conditions - but it was REALLY low. Didn't have a pump, didn't want to risk blowing it up with the CO2. No help, there. Pulled over one other time - brake was rubbing, AGAIN. Otherwise my pace was good, REALLY wished my Garmin was functioning, that messed with my head, big time. Passed 13 people with flats, 2 crashes (with emergency vehicles) and so much debris (bottles, cages, tubes) on the road that I could open a bike shop. With the money Vineman brings in, it would be wonderful to see the roads improved. That said, it's a BEAUTIFUL course, and the volunteers are amazing.
What would you do differently?:

Garmin function.
Transition 2
  • 04m 56s
Comments:

This is the longest run off the bike, ever. Handled the run, racking, okay - but forot to take my gloves off! Ran 13.1 with them.......
What would you do differently?:

Take off the gloves, have water there for a quick swig with my endurolytes. Oh, and turn pro to save myself .2 miles of running!!!
Run
  • 2h 18m 34s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Crushed me. I may have pushed it too hard on the bike, and my recent bike fit still really needs to be dialed in - but the bottom line is that this just hurt. Carrying my bike gloves probably didn't cost me anytime, but I felt like an idiot. First few miles weren't bad, but it went downhill in the winery - again. Used the inhaler, twice. Feet were on fire, and by mile 7 it felt like I had broken bones in my left foot. Turns out I had two ripped toe nails, one blackening one, and SEVEN blisters. Swelling there, but I don't think anything's broken. First half was at 9:10 pace, second half at 12:00. YIKES.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure, but I better figure it out before Tahoe!!!
Post race
Warm down:

head between the legs at a table in the shade. Several strawberries. Some melon. Lots of water. Limped to T2, struggle to the car.......

Event comments:

Perfect race, amazing volunteers - but fix the roads, or I probably won't be back. They are THAT bad.
