Swim
Comments: This was the segment I was scared most for - I ended up being scared for nothing. The swim was actually the easiest - and the funnest - portion. What would you do differently?: Continue/more practice. Transition 1
Comments: Running from the warm natatorium to the chilly outside air was brutal - it felt like my whole body was numb. Putting on my helmet must have taken a solid 1:30 - I made the mistake of throwing on gloves, but then couldn't get my helmet clasped through the glove's thick fabric. Ended up having to take off my gloves to clasp it. What would you do differently?: After putting on shirt, put on helmet! This is the most important part, so that should be done almost right off the bat. Bike
Comments: My bike was not in the correct gear for the entire race - I couldn't get the larger gear to shift, so I ended up doing the whole thing on gear 7, yet it wasn't enough resistance, so on flats/downhills, spinning was completely useless. I finally got it fixed AFTER the race, but this hour was the most frustrating thing EVER. What would you do differently?: Check the bike continuously leading up to the race! Also, need more training on the hills - the first of the two rolling hills was absolutely brutal. Transition 2
Comments: Not much to say - threw off my windbreaker and helmet, racked the bike, and kept going. The initial landing from dismounting the bike was HARSH - I'd been practicing, but the fact that I had been spinning uselessly for the past hour made the landing particularly precarious. What would you do differently?: Just continue practicing. Run
Comments: The course was beautiful - took you back to what felt like the middle of nowhere. Very easy and nice segment to the race; my feet were still numb and wet and felt like bricks for the first mile or so of the race, but once I found my pace, I was comfortable for the rest of the race. What would you do differently?: More practice. I can run, but I need to add more brick workouts to my workout regime. Post race
Warm down: No real warm down other than getting out of my wet gross race clothes and into clean, dry ones... and the fresh pancakes they had waiting at the finish line.. (: What limited your ability to perform faster: My bike, mostly. I can always improve, so I just need to continue training through the off season and hopefully come back to do a longer and faster race. Event comments: SO much fun! It was my first ever triathlon, and it was the perfect distance/course to formally introduce me to the sport. I've fallen in love with it, and I can't wait to do this race again next year! I made sure to have everything packed the evening before - was in bed by 8PM, and woke up around 4AM. Breakfast was a piece of wheat toast with peanut butter, which turned out to be a great choice that kept my stomach settled and full.
No warm up was done.
