Run
Comments: It was a little tough to decide how to dress. My original attire was based on cold temps (30s) but out of nowhere it turned warm: 50s. So of course I didn't wear as much as I had planned, but yet it was VERY windy, 20-30 mph, so I knew it would be chillier at times. I ended up wearing a long sleeved wind-front shirt under a 1/4 zip tech shirt, long tights (not really thermal) and a hat. At times I was OK, but most of the time I was a bit too hot. Oh, you want to hear about the actual race? OK, here goes! I started out a bit too slow but made the mistake of not looking at my pace in time to make corrections. After 1 mile I saw I was below the pace I wanted, so I picked it up a notch. I had 2 different pace bunnies: one to stay close to and one to stay ahead of. There was a guy in a grey and orange jacket who was running a comprable pace to me; he was my stay close to. The aforementioned outrageously-dressed girl in pink and her chums were the ones to stay ahead of! On the hill to the cemetary I passed her (yes!) only for her to find this burst of speed to catch up to her friends after we crested. I picked up the pace just a bit to get back ahead of them, succeeded, and stayed ahead of them for the remainder of the race. Grey and orange guy was still where he should be. After mile 2 I was much happier with my pace and picked it up just a bit more to try to make up for my dawdling earlier. Oh no, what's this? I'm passing grey/orange guy? Oh, he's waiting for his wife, cool. Reeled in a few people in the close of mile 2. Hit mile 3 and tried to push without overdoing it that I wouldn't make it strongly to the finish. Done! I bested my RRH (recent running history) PR for this course, not for a 5K, which made me happy. I feel I may have had a shot at the new 5K PR if I would've done the pace I wanted to do. Hard to say with this course; the 2 hills could keep this from being a course to PR on for me. We'll see what the next 2 races in the series bring. What would you do differently?: Dress differently, although I'm not sure at the moment what I would choose instead. Check my Garmin sooner in the first mile to make sure I'm on the desired pace (it's why I wear the thing, right?!?). Post race
Warm down: Not much because I had to keep moving. Returned my chip and grabbed my bowl of homemade chicken corn noodle soup, it's SOOO freaking good and it's seriously why I do this race! ;) Soup and I went straight to the car to leave ASAP to get home to go to the AHL Outdoor Classic, no hanging around for raffle prizes today! What limited your ability to perform faster: Being a little too hot but mainly not checking my pace. Event comments: This race sure took a jump from last year; 665 racers today compared to 532 last January. Maybe the sunny day brought people out. That or the soup! Last updated: 2012-11-09 12:00 AM

Thankfully got there early and was able to get a good 'quick getaway' spot. In the time it took me to walk to registration to pick up my number and come back to the car, all available parking spots were gone and people were trolling around trying to find somewhere to put their vehicles. Hung out in my car until about 15-20 minutes before the start, then went in to use the ladies' room and to stretch. After my little warm-up, I picked a spot in the masses to start and continued to do some stretching and limbering up. And people-watching, of course. I saw a person decked out in an outrageous outfit with some pals who were slightly less-crazily dressed, so I made it my mission to be sure to finish ahead of them! Hey, everybody's gotta have a carrot to chase, right? ;)
I actually did a few very light, slow laps around the parking lot to get my legs moving and blood flowing. This is the first time I've ever done a running warm-up.
