Pre-race routine:

We had gotten bagels and peanut butter at Kroger the day before. It was possibly the worst bagel that I have ever had, but I ate it along with my bottle of water with caffeinated Crystal Lite. We got ready, watched the early starters going back and forth on the Broadway bridge from our hotel window, and wondered what we had gotten ourselves into! We stayed in our nice warm hotel room with its flushing toilet until ~7:30. We hit the restroom one more time in the lobby before heading to the start just down the street.

I decided as we were walking down the street that I did not need my earband so I handed that off to mom. We got to the crowd and I started worming my way forward. When I got to the 6 hour pace group, I started to panic that I wasn't going to get to the right place in time. I climbed out of the fence and walked up the sidewalk to the next intersection. I was able to find the 4:40 pace group and then finally the 4:10 group. I dropped my throwaway sweatshirt before even getting in line. I was in line in the right place in plenty of time. My garmin kept going into some powersave mode and I obviously was pushing the wrong button because it kept having to refind the satellites. I was a little worried it wouldn't find them in time, but it did.

Comments:

I had a really good day! I ran with the 4:10 group and they were awesome! There were two of them, Scott and Heather and they were wearing cowboy/cowgirl outfits. Scott was even wearing jeans!! They kept us right on pace and were very encouraging as we ran up the "big" hill. I have never felt that good that far into a marathon. When the pacer said were were at the top of the big hill, I was surprised we were up already. The descent after that was great.

I was still feeling really good until we hit the out and back. I hated that part! I suspect I needed a gel at that point, but somehow that didn't register until later. I faded back from the pace group, but not too much. I just kept thinking I must be almost to the turnaround - it took forever to get there! (It was a 2.5 mile out and back). I saw Molly heading the other way about the time I was almost done with the out and back. The last few miles were kind of a blur. There was a small hill up an overpass and then a bigger one that had the 25 mile marker on it. I did pick some lipstick at the lipstick stop, but didn't put it on.

I high fived Bart Yasso in the finish chute and cruised to the finish line. I was very pleased with my time as I was only 2 minutes off my PR off of much less training.
What would you do differently?:

Take the third gel sooner - maybe a gel automatically at mile 18 would be a good idea. I did do 4, but it was probably 19 or so before I did the 3rd one. I will need to do some more miles before a serious PR or BQ attempt, but I was very pleased with this time off of winter training!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked through the chute, got my picture taken, got some snacks, and kept walking. Staggered up the hill to where mom and Leslie were waiting (though it took me a minute to find them). Then we waited for Molly to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training - I had an OK training cycle, but not quite what I had planned. Had some knee issues before Christmas so didn't get quite the build I had wanted. Also, the fueling error may have cost me a PR.

Event comments:

This was a great event. They really go all out and should rightfully be proud of this race! The medal really is enormous. The whole trip was a lot of fun and I would definitely do this race again if it were closer.

Course: It did have some hills, but I didn't think they were terrible. The first part rolls (lot of highway overpasses) and there are a LOT of turns. A lot of neighborhoods, but some historic/scenic things (Governor's mansion, Central HS, Capitol building). Then it climbs up into Hillcrest for ~2 miles. I didn't think it was that steep, just long though there were a few false flats. Then there's a nice descent and then a LONG but flat out and back. The last few miles have a couple of hills, one big enough to get your attention.
