Total Time = 1h 15m 55s
Overall Rank = 124/436
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 11/33
Pre-race routine:

Had banana, half of a bagel. Gatorade and Gu before start.
Event warmup:

Did brief bike of some of course, short jog, and short swim.
Swim
  • 11m 26s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lousy swim. I felt OK at start. Didn't feel the need for much sighting because I could see the rope every time I breathed. But was slow in the turn around boat and on the return. I got boxed in and had to stop swimming and tread water a few times.
What would you do differently?:

Conserve even more energy at the start. Develop ability to speed up out of congestion when necessary. Improve comfort in sighting. Should have worn wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Pretty quick considering fatigue. Just had to put on shoes, glasses, and helmet. Ran with shoes on and got onto bike at mount line.
What would you do differently?:

Little. I like not wearing a shirt. Could consider sticking sunglasses in helmet somehow and then put them on later into bike. Didn't use cooler to dip feet, but I like the idea of having it if desired. Small towel works great.
Bike
  • 41m 42s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 19.42 mile/hr
Comments:

Not bad. Would like to develop the strength and stamina to push harder the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Frozen water bottle hadn't thawed enough to drink very much! The Polar bottle works too well.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Not easy to get out of my shoes, so I'm losing some time loosening all the straps and then pulling my feet off. But dismounting and running for the first time in a race was pretty smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Get simpler shoes. There are Shimanos I like the look of with a single strap and reasonable price. I'm also going to buy some Yankz, as I don't like the speed laces I have very well.
Run
  • 20m 47s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Tiny cups didn't allow much drinking. I seemed to push pretty well and sustain a good pace. I was certainly ready for it to end though! Good sprint at the end.
What would you do differently?:

If I were in better swim and bike shape, I think I'd have more energy to push on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Massage, and later a short jog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

SWIM! SWIM! SWIM!

Event comments:

Great post-race food (chicken, pizza, pasta, lots of fruit, cookes, etc.).
