Pre-race routine:

Usual - bagel and PB with coffee. Gel before swim start.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 35m 9s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Standard swim - thought I might have been a couple of minutes quicker but between 30-35 mins is the usual spread. Found some good feet halfway round by lost then at the second turn buoy.
What would you do differently?:

Swim a lot more in training if I want to go any faster. One session a week doesn't cut it.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No timings yet for T1 but I suspect this was slooow. Not least the 400m uphill run. Took my time as I knew the bike was going to be unpleasant so for the first time ever I put on a cycling jacket in a triathlon.
Bike
  • 3h 31m 40s
  • 56 miles
  • 15.89 mile/hr
Comments:

This was significantly hard work. 4000ft of climbing and I haven't done enough training to cope. After the first circuit I knew I was in for a long ride and no chance of getting round in 3:15 my goal time. In the end I was concentrating on keeping something for the run. This was my slowest half iron bike time by 45 minutes.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No individual times for T2. But no problems - in/out in less than 2 minutes.
Run
  • 2h 06m 38s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

A death march. Horrible.
Post race
Warm down:

None

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

For those reading this report thinking about doing IM70.3UK - it will find you out if you don't train properly for it. I got found out - no excuses. For comparison 2 weeks earlier at The Outlaw Half on a very flat course I went 5:02. For this race I was 1'20 slower. How Ritchie Nicholls ran that course sub 1:15 is a complete mystery to me. It was utterly enervating after the bike leg.

Excellently run event though - no complaints about the organization. Plenty of volunteers and a great crowd. Just a shame that the weather was rubbish.
