Pre-race routine:

Spent two days prior around the resort, exploring, shopping with my Wife. Went for a short 30 minute easy ride the day before. Race morning headed to transition at 5:30 then walked to swim start with everyone else. Grapenuts, bagel and nutella for breakfast with a lot of water.
Event warmup:

None other than watching the pros start and stretching my arms a bit.
Swim
  • 1h 24m 56s
  • 4156 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

A normal swim for me based on training. I took everything super wide. I was swimming in my own time zone as this was my first IM. I was ok with that and enjoyed the swim at my own pace with very little contact. The water got shallow earlier than expected so I started to walk and then jammed my toes on some rocks. Swam a bit more until it was sandy. Got out of the water kissed my wife and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Man up and get closer to the buoys
Transition 1
  • 15m 14s
Comments:

Don't know what happened here. Lightly jogged to transition grabbed my bag and entered the chaos. I think I was a bit frazzled and cramped for space to change. I also ate a bar and knew it was going to be a long day and didn't want to forget anything. Still think I could have cut this time in half
What would you do differently?:

Run faster to the tent and not get overwhelmed with the chaos.
Bike
  • 6h 49m 7s
  • 111.85 miles
  • 16.38 mile/hr
Comments:

Being the first IM I was cautious to push it on the bike. My goal was to finish so I took it easy when needed. St. Jovite is the best town ever, I felt like a rockstar cruising through there. People cheering and salsa music blasting, as I bombed through the corners. If the whole course was like that everyone would have PRs on the bike. The section on 117 got boring, especially the second lap when the wind picked up and it never seemed to be a tailwind.

Then there were hills. Leading up to the race I had no idea what to suspect. I did a lot of hill training so I hoped I was prepared. I know everyone is saying the course is hilly, but I will be the only one to disagree. Yes, there were some steeper hills on the tail end of the course, but nothing major that took more than 60 sec to get over. I had the right gearing as I spun past many people grinding up here, or walking on the second loop. Granted some passed me when it flattened out, but I'd like to think my legs were in better shape for the run.

Overall I was right on with my ride, maybe a touch better, but survived it and felt ready to run.
What would you do differently?:

Push it harder on the flats
Transition 2
  • 04m 33s
Comments:

A better transition here. Shorts, shirt, shoes, belt, visor, slam a gel and I'm off
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 5h 14m 33s
  • 26.22 miles
  • 11m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt ok on the run. Didn't push myself for risk of injury. I knew I could finish even if I walked. It was pretty hot at the start but the hoses and sprinklers along the course kept me cool. The second lap it started to get cold as the sun was starting to set. The last 15k or so I started walking the aid stations and major hills. Trudging along the final 5k, I was lucky to have Chad from Hoboken to keep me company and focused.

The best finish ever coming through the town, high fiving strangers and forgetting about the whole day as I crossed the finish line.
early in the run I thought I may be able to go under 14hrs and was super happy so accomplish that.

What would you do differently?:

Push myself harder
Post race
Warm down:

Ate some french fries and gravy and anything else I could find. Hobbled back to the hotel to drop bike and bags. Hobbled back to the finish to cheer a bit and eat more.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My fear of not finishing. This stemmed from not trusting training or this being my first IM. I trained alone following a plan and had no choice but to trust it. I never did an official 70.3 leading up to it or any other tris this year.

Event comments:

Very impressed, well run except for a few flaws, finding registration and the athlete meeting being waaaayyyy too late. I think it didnt start until an hour and change past it's scheduled time.
