Swim
Comments: I swam really well for this race. I knew the race would start with a sprint, so I put my head down and went for it the first 50-100 yards. I used a swimmers breathing technique and breathed only to my right. As the group thinned out, I found a few good feet to follow. I settled down into my rythmn and really tried to work on my reach and technique. I must have been flying, since I ended up catching quite a few people towards the end of the swim. What would you do differently?: Not much. I know that bumping is normal, so I really can't say, "Not run over slower people." Transition 1
Comments: Using my new tri suit made the first transition pretty easy. I took about a minute off of my first T1 last year. I think what took the longest time was getting into my socks. Otherwise, things went pretty quickly. One thing I need more practice with is getting jumping on to the bike. I still lack a little confidence there. What would you do differently?: FInd some way to get my socks on more quickly. Probably just takes practice. Bike
Comments: Everyone who rode the course talked about the large number of technical climbs. THis was a tough off road course. I saw a couple of people go down, as well as multiple people have to run/walk the hills. Several places on the course had very technical climbs, with loose rocks and roots mixed in with the tough grades to make going up that much harder. That said, when passing, everyone gave trail and let people pass. What would you do differently?: Train more for climbing and off road hills. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty dececnt T2. I was really tired coming in from the bike. I intentionally spun a bit as I rode the last 1/4 mile into the transition area. It was really cool hearing my wife and daughter cheering for me as I rode in. I could hear my daughter even before I could see her. It put a smile on my face for the entire run. What would you do differently?: I need to work on getting my shoes tied more quickly. I slipped in pretty easily but felt it took some time to get them tightened. Run
Comments: Felt pretty tired by the time it came to the run. I ended up walking several of the hills. I tried to keep a good pace, especially on the flats. I felt like I was going a lot slower than I actually was, baseed on my time and pace info after the race. I did fall once when I snagged a toe on a root. Go figure, I make it through the bike without falling and fall while running. It was great to see and hear my wife and daughter at the end of the race. What would you do differently?: Work on climbing workouts for running. I think I could have made better time if I had been used to running up hills. Post race
Warm down: Got my water bottle and a bananna and walked about a mile to retreive my sandals from the swim start. I tried to keep moving so that my legs wouldn't get stiff. Must have worked, since I am entering this info on Sunday and my legs are hardly sore at all. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think my early season training was spot on, but that my spring training was pretty spotty and not as consistent. I would like to have more consistent training. Event comments: I think the race organizer was pretty good, getting everything together. He somehow lost the port-o-lets, but managed to find at least one replacement. It was well used. The post race activities were okay as well. Last updated: 2006-06-08 12:00 AM

Since the race started at 8:30 and the transition area didn't open until 6:30, I didn't rush around too much. I got up around 6:00 and ate, then drove the 15 minutes to the race and laid out my gear.
After laying out my transition area, I stretched. My left hip was feeling a bit tight, as well as my hamstrings. I worked on these areas for a bit.
Closer to the start, I spent a little time swimming to loosen up my shoulders for the swim.
