Swim
Comments: VERY VERY ROUGH! My wife said it was the most challenging swim she has ever done. Funny story: the day before, on Saturday, we took a warm-up swim in the pond. The water was wonderful and calm. We knew there was a 'chance' of rain on race day, so I said to her, "Hey, its only a pond... how rough can it be?" These were words I would regret saying, and my wife repeated them over and over in her head during her entire swim leg of the race! Her first comment to me in the transition area was, not surprisingly "Only a pond? Only a pond, you said!?" She hasn't let me forget it! What would you do differently?: What would I do differently? Nothing - my wife was the one that had to endure that swim! Transition 1
Comments: I was already set for the bike, so the only transition item was transferring the timing chip and unracking the bike. Bike
Comments: The course was wet and windy, but the wind settled down during the 2nd loop. I felt like I held my own on the course, the only folks that passed me were the leaders going at a significantly faster pace. Generally I was passing people on the hills, and maintained a relatively steady HR and cadence. Actually, this was a really FUN ride, despite the rain and winds. Although it is not a fair comparison since I didn't do the swim, I was right around the 51st percentile, up from my Timberman time. What would you do differently?: I need to get some rain gear! Transition 2
Comments: There was a bit of bottleneck going into the transition area that slowed me down a bit. Aside from that, I actually think I did pretty well... I wasn't a tranistion slug! Run
Comments: I really didn't think the run would happen... after the thunder and lightning on the bike, I was convinced the race would have been cancelled or shortened. I went into the run feeling really good, did the first loop in about 58 minutes, and was able to keep running for the first 9 miles without stopping... then I got to the 2nd round of the pits! Argh! That got me. I had to walk some, and the next 2+ miles felt like it took forever. I was really hoping to get under 2 hours, but I missed it by 2.5 minutes. Again, it isn't really a fair comparison since I was doing a relay, I finished in ~57th percentile, about the same as the Timberman. What would you do differently?: I really wish I could have kept running and not have walked. More hill training may help me here. Post race
Warm down: Some light stretching and then walked back to the hotel. The only thing sore was my thighs, so we did a bunch of walking that afternoon and evening (by the way, the sun came out around 2pm and it was beautiful the rest of the day!) What limited your ability to perform faster: The weather certainly had an impact, but who knows how much.... All in all, this was a really fun race, and I hope to do it again next year with my wife. Event comments: The award dinner was really good. Being at a hotel right next to the transition area was very, very nice! Not having to deal with traffic, parking, and getting up super early really was a PLUS. Last updated: 2006-06-08 12:00 AM

This race was a relay race with my wife. She did the swim and I dd the bike & run.
We awoke to the sound of pouring rain, so our warmup involved a brisk and wet walk to the transition area from the hotel, and then a quick scamper over to the tent after the bike was racked.
