Pre-race routine:

This race did not start till 8 so I got an extra hour of sleep this morning. Got up, took a shower ate a Mojo bar on my way to the race.
Event warmup:

Got body marked by world champion marker Comet. Racked my bike and set up my area. 2 visits to the porta-potty and waited for the swim start.
Swim
  • 15m 48s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a bad swim, not a good swim. This was the first deep water swim start I have ever done. Swam pretty good, passed a few people and got passed by some. The exit from the water was a climb up a wodden ladder. There were lots of people there helping, but after the swim, when your legs are a little jello-y, it was an interesting climb.
What would you do differently?:

Put in more time in the pool.
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Probably one of my best transitions ever. Decided not to deal with gloves. That helped with the speed. I was also racked in a good location close to the bike out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I am very happy with this transition
Bike
  • 45m 42s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 16.32 mile/hr
Comments:

I love the bike. If triathlons were bike, bike, bike I would do much better. I passed lots of people on the bike. Finally think I have it adjusted pretty close to perfect. I think the saddle needs to go up about 1/2 inch more. I really felt good on the bike!
What would you do differently?:

Pedal faster!
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Another good transition
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Run
  • 40m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Wanted to do between 12-13 minute mile but maybe I gave too much on the bike. Just slow plodding along! The COOLEST thing ever...Desiree Ficker who obviously finished first was out on the run course, standing on the side of the road shouting encouragement to all the runners. That alone was worth the price of admission!

EDIT - Results are posted and by the skin of my teeth I was just under the 13 minute mile mark. YEAH ME
What would you do differently?:

Just put more miles in. I have been getting better, but I know I still have a long way to go.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the line where Steve, Mom, Haley, Aaron, John and Chris (Cammy) were waiting. Got some water, relaxed for a few minutes, collected my stuff and headed home

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Obviously my run. I have to put more miles in. I also can't neglect the swim as I have lately.

Event comments:

My only complaint - with the exception that I did not place, is that the transition area was in a parking lot and it did not appear that they swept the lot. There was lots of gravel that was uncomfortable coming in from the swim. I tried to clean my feet before putting on my socks, but I still had the gravel on my feet. Was not an issue on the bike, but on several occasions on the run I had to slow way down (yes, slow for me means stop), and move my feet in my shoes to rearrange the gravel. Other than that, the race was very well organized, lots of volunteers and just a lot of fun!
