Pre-race routine:

I usually have everything laid out the night before, so I get up and go. I just drink a bottle of Gatorade prior to a 5k.
Event warmup:

Walking and stretching. My left hamstring has been tight so I've been giving it extra attention.
Run
  • 27m 17s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal was to hit a PB. I haven't been doing much speed training recently, so I was unsure whether I could do it. However, I had been busy swimming, biking, and trying to run longer distances. So I didn't know what the impact of this training would be on speed.

Overall, I am very happy with the result.

What would you do differently?:

I would find my form falling apart at times, including leaning too far back.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch and get the race food!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing other than a lack of ability and I'm still about 10 lbs. overweight.

Event comments:

Well organized race. It is associated with the Houston Marathon and is the day before. Many use it as a warmup event.

Performance: Good
Course: The course was very flat throughout houston Despite that there were 3,200 runners, most people were running from the start, so there was much less weaving and dodging around walkers. I was free from walking/slow traffic after 2-3 minutes, while it took me about 8 minutes at the Turkey Trot.
