Pre-race routine:

I went out and drove the course the night before. At the time I thought to myself, self...this bike course is going to be a bit bumpy...prophecy hehe.

Otherwise I had some lasagna for dinner, got my bag prepped and the bike in the car. Tried to sleep and failed, just had too much stuff going on in my head (not all of it tri related).

Morning of the race had some peanut butter and toast, a few endurolytes and some ibuprofin. About an hour before the race I had some more water and grahm crackers.

Arrived at the race just after 5am. Parking is a ways from the event so I came in on the bike. Got transition set up just fine and was feeling pretty good. Then I realized they gave me the wrong timing chip.

Turns out it wasn't a huge issue. They knew they had given someone the wrong one just weren't sure who. As soon as I got to the "problem" tent they said, "We have been thinking you would turn up." Got my correct chip and then I was outta there.
Event warmup:

Got my wetsuit on and slipped into the lake. Morning water temp they announced as 66 degrees. I was comfy as a seal in my wetsuit and spent the whole time they allowed me in the water getting warmed up.

Pre-race meeting was done on the beach at the chute. Stood around for 20 or so while they gave us the course rules again and then we started on time.
Swim
  • 13m 49s
  • 800 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was about ideal. The only thing I might have been able to do was draft better. My coach tells me I'm a naturally strong swimmer, not fast but strong. I wasn't sure about what he was saying till I hit the water with my wave. I held my own well and had no difficulties when kicked, battered, and cut off.
What would you do differently?:

By far my best event of the day. Not much I would do differently but get faster
Transition 1
  • 05m 28s
Comments:

OK when I practiced this it went better. There was quite a long run on san to get to T1. I think that didn't help things. I shook off the swim transition pretty well but my legs aren't used to running that far in soft sand. I ended up walking a short way up the sand hill and that didn't help my time.

Suit got stuck on my heels. I think because I hadn't thought to bodyglide my ankles and I was a bit worn out from the sand run. Could have gone better.

That said, once I got the suit off I popped my socks on and ran my bike out. Shoes weren't rubber banded because I didn't practice that way, but they were clipped on with the pedals level so they didn't drag. Since I practiced it this way I was able to toe them level and get up to speed fast.
What would you do differently?:

Bodyglide my ankles, get more run base for a sand out run transition.

Comments:

This is where things started to go a bit wrong. Not catastophic (saw some of that on this bike course) but it was not my idea of a good ride.

The bike was the one event I expected to excel in. So it came as a bit of a disappointment when I was shifting on the way up a hill and caught a bad spot in the road. It bounced me enough my chain derailed and to make matter worse it spun into my gear and got stuck.

The good thing is I wasn't at high speed or locking up like that would have put me in for a nasty spill. The bad news is it wasn't as simple as re-seating the chain and going. It took me at least 6 minutes to get the freaking chain freed so I could reseat it. I am grateful that it wasn't so bad as to DNF me though.

The road was not good. They had "patched" it quite a bit but the reality is it was really bouncy out there. I saw a few people spill out bad due to wheels jamming in pavement splits. Quite a few flats out there from potholes too. That was my major worry for most of the bike. Being 218 I kept weighting for a pinch flat and used more energy "staying light" then I should have. I didn't want to blow another 6-10 mins off the course changing a tire though.
What would you do differently?:

Not have a mechanical failure?

Not much really except maybe not get rattled and play to "avoid further mishap". Especially on an event that should be my strength.
Transition 2
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

I was out of shoes and ready, came off the bike fast (spooked one of the volunteers who apparently hadn't seen much of the dismount at speed hehe)

Ran in with my bike just fine. Problem is I missed my rack and had to turn around and come back. Had some trouble with my neighbors bike being in already and encroaching on my area. Moved it over a tad and racked mine. Then got my shoes on and ran out.
What would you do differently?:

Remember where I was parked...
Run
  • 40m 31s
  • 3.98 miles
  • 10m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Ahh yes my nemesis. I used to love to run, back when my joints worked well and I managed 5min miles. Now it is a study in mental discipline.

I came out of T2 too fast. I paced in at about 8:30 over my first mile which is not good for me. I was backing off when I hit the hill. My HR was too high so I suffered going up the hill and about 1/4 mile afterward. Then it leveled off and I found my pace.

Wasn't a pretty run by any standards but I came in at my projected time.
What would you do differently?:

Come out of T2 slower and pace better.
Post race
Warm down:

Relaxed and took a swim in the lake. Saw my wife and daughter, my in-laws, and my super spiffy friend Canella who rollerbladed out to the event.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike problems, then mental problems recoveribng from the bike problems...

Lack of run base but I knew that going in (hey I just started in April hehe).

Event comments:

Very well run event. There was plenty of help on the course and it was a very clean course. Everything went off on time.

The course itself is not very scenic and the road for the bike portion is pretty rough. The swim is ok and the run is just kinda there.

Well runevent overall.
