Swim
Comments: First tri so definitely not ready for the bun fight over the first 3-400m. Thought I did pretty well just keeping my stroke and concentrating on my breathing. Gently trotted into the sea to try and reduce the effect of the start on my breathing. The sand bank is pretty steep so dropping into the lake section had to double up on my breathing for the first 100m or so, but generally OK. What would you do differently?: I don't think I would change anything, only started the swim training (from scratch) 5 months before the tri so will be interesting going into this year how much difference being already swim fit will make. Transition 1
Comments: Really pleased with the time on this. Concentrated very hard on having the transition set up so as not to forget anything and then ran over several times in my mind. Nice and clean, everything in it's place and very glad I poured some water over my face to clean off the algae from the lake. What would you do differently?: Perhaps this year training will involve trying the jumping on with pre-clipped pedals....or maybe not. But don't really need to change anything. Bike
Comments: A really comfortable and enjoyable ride. Nailed the hills pretty well and definitely felt that riding the course previously had helped. Really happy with the time & pace. What would you do differently?: Even though I was happy with pace, with hindsight I felt that I could have pushed harder, but my big worry was blowing out and having nothing for the run. With at least two tri's under my belt by next year, I'll definitely put a little more into the bike leg. Transition 2
Comments: Again, really concentrated on getting everything right rather than maximum speed. Took on a little water, some over the head to stay cool while lacing up. What would you do differently?: Elastic laces and no separate watch. Already taken care of with a new HR monitor for this year. Run
Comments: Had to concentrate very hard early on not to go out too hard. Reigned in after the first km and concentrated on a solid first lap. Gained a lot of confidence through the second lap as I overtook lots of folk and still felt strong. What would you do differently?: Possibly not reign in so hard, but will depend on how I come off the bike next time. Kick for home much earlier if I feel as good as I did this year. Post race
Warm down: Absolutely none. Had a banana and chocolate milk followed about 40 minutes later by a few glasses of champagne with my training group. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing really. The training plan saw me through faster than expected on all three legs. Looking back my fear of having nothing left on the run slowed my bike but for a first effort I wouldn't change anything. Event comments: Brilliant organisation and the course is superb. Never felt like I wasn't sure on the course, plenty of drink stations, well placed and well stocked with drinks & fruits. Must be head ache for the traffic police but they coped very well and I didn't see or hear of any traffic problems with athletes. Great touch that they get the school kids out, I felt like a real athlete in parts!! Last updated: 2013-01-11 12:00 AM
