Pre-race routine:

Muffins and water for breakfast. Arrived early to check out the venue!
Event warmup:

A few laps in the pool
Swim
  • 10m
  • 425 meters
  • 02m 21s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was jittery before the start and went out too fast! Slowed down after I found I couldn't breathe well, but that threw me off a bit because I had to alter my breathing pattern.
What would you do differently?:

Start slower; keep a constant speed and breathing pattern throughout.
Transition 1
  • 10m
Comments:

They gave us 10 min to change and get up to the bike room; plenty of time to dry off and do a full change.
Bike
  • 30m
  • 14.4 miles
  • 28.80 mile/hr
Comments:

Only problem I had with the bike was altering the resistance. I couldn't get it to stay (not familiar with that type) and so was bouncing in my seat. I felt very good about my effort, though - don't think I could have done more here. Bike room was a bit distracting with people coming and going.
What would you do differently?:

Experiment with the bike a bit beforehand.
Transition 2
  • 05m
Comments:

Gave us 5 min to get to the treadmills; plenty of time. Got a bit of calf/hip stretching in here.
Run
  • 20m
  • 2.3 miles
  • 08m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out slow/long run pace. When legs still felt good, upped it a bit, and kept upping it. I was afraid I would go too fast, and realized too late I could have gone faster for much longer. Finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

Use bigger increases and find optimal speed sooner.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking/light stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training: should do speed/interval work in swimming and running. For swimming, I need to continue to work on upper body strength training and bilateral breathing, which would have helped me get into a better rhythm.

Event comments:

There weren't really any post race activities, which is why I put "average" there. For my first tri, this was a great race; not as intimidating as an outdoor tri, but still required fitness in all of the disciplines. Venue was gorgeous - nicest gym I've ever seen!

Overall very happy with my first race!
