Precipitation
Total Time = 2h 27m 49s
Overall Rank = 57/355
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 9/40
Pre-race routine:

Walk in the pouring rain to Transition while complaining about the cold.
Event warmup:

Yell at the rain and do a 1 mile warm-up with Jamie.
Swim
  • 22m 52s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Man... This swim sucked. This is the first time I've experienced full contact triathlon. Kicked in the face a few times and even accidentally smacking someone in the head at the beginning of a stroke. The current on the first portion of the swim was slight, but just enough to notice that it slowed me down. I wasn't as calm as I've been in the past and got tired quickly. I have a hypothesis that the wet suit actually doesn't help me that much. I might try my next open water without one just to see how I do. Also, it was COLD AS HELL!
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on my sighting... That's my main problem I think. Because I feel like I don't know where I am half the time, I loose focus on my form and my breathing. As stated before, I really think I'm a worse swimmer in my wetsuit. (I know it was cold as hell, but I think I coulda bit the bullet and done this without a wet suit)
Transition 1
  • 04m 27s
Comments:

This began with a .25 mile barefoot run to transition. My feet were numb and hurting since most of it was on concrete. I lost my dang goggles and earplugs as I took my wetsuit off which sucks cause I liked those goggles.
What would you do differently?:

Pay closer attention to my wetsuit and goggles when taking off wetsuit.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 55s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.17 mile/hr
Comments:

I used my brakes a lot since it was so wet. There was one time I really thought I was going to slide and crash, but luckily physics was kind to me and let me remain upright! The rain was certainly a hindrance and I'm really happy to see I averaged out above 20 mph on this ride!
Really hard climb at mile 15, but I muscled through it pretty well I think.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much. I think I did a pretty good job considering the weather!
Transition 2
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

My hands and feet were numb from the cold here. I had real troubles getting my shoes off and on. Also had a problem getting my race bib on because I couldn't feel my hands! I had to tell myself to get going and stop standing around screwing with the stupid belt.
What would you do differently?:

Get going and mess with the belt while running. I shouldn't have been standing still at all as soon as I had my shoes on. Nothing I could have done about my feet and hands... Possibly I should have worn really thick gloves on the ride in such cold weather.
Run
  • 44m 38s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Lots of big puddles that I had to splash through. I think at this point in the race, I didn't care too much since I had already been drenched :) I started off pretty fast at a 6:30 ish pace, but couldn't hold that for the rest of the run. Still, I think this is my best 10k time of all time! Had a bit of a cramp, but it didn't hinder me at all. My left quad was pretty painful by then end too.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe take it a bit slower coming out of transition?
Post race
Warm down:

Got a tin foil blanket for warmth and ate some bananas, chips and an apple.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The cold!!

Event comments:

This was a good race despite the rain and the cold. I think this would be so fun in better weather! I hope to maybe do this again next year! I know I complained a lot in this report, but that was mostly about mother nature. REV3 does an excellent job!
