Swim
Comments: I'm a few pounds too big for my wetsuit, and I felt slightly restricted in stroking and breathing. Aside from that, I navigated ok, took a short pause after the second bouy (which was a mistake because the area was crowded and I got run over). Felt like I was in traffic the whole time, which at least means I'm keeping up with the pack. What would you do differently?: Lose weight so that the wetsuit would fit better. Transition 1
Comments: I have a lot of trouble with my suit getting stuck on my heels and lower legs, even with tons of Body Glide. Maybe I should practice that more. What would you do differently?: Practice removing the wetsuit. Bike
Comments: Last year I raced on my 1984 Schwinn road bike with clip-on aerobars. This year I had a Cervelo P2K TT bike. Took only 7 seconds off of last year's time, but was 123rd of 155 men (slower than 79%) last year and 70th of 103 (slower than 68%) this year, so I guess it was harder for everyone. What would you do differently?: Train more consistently leading up to race; embrace the bike trainer! Transition 2
Comments: Ok transition. Two people who dismounted right before me were walking their bikes into transition and held me up a bit. Was careful riding up to transition due to the wet pavement. Run
Comments: I'm disappointed in my run. I just didn't feel good. I don't know if sitting in the cold water drained me, or if I went too hard on the bike. I didn't drink my whole bike bottle because I felt breakfast try to come up a couple of times, and felt that it would be pointless to drink more because I would probably throw up. It was cold, so I didn't get thirsty anyway. What would you do differently?: Go a little easier on the bike and just suck it up and run harder. Post race
Warm down: Got under a shelter to dry off and get something to eat. What limited your ability to perform faster: Ate too much for breakfast. Probably got in the water too early. Probably went too hard on the bike. Event comments: Few volunteers - I suppose because it was cold and rainy. The turnaround cone on the run course had no course marshal - the runners coming back told me that they thought it was probably the cone. Based on the distance I ran, that seems right. I don't really blame the race organizers for that; it was probably a struggle to get enough volunteers on a morning like that. Last updated: 2013-01-30 12:00 AM

Bowl of grits for breakfast. 20 oz. bottle of Powerade about an hour before the race. Tried to stay warm and chatted with my cousin who was also racing.
Swam about 100 meters or so just to get acclimated to the cold water. Race was delayed a few minutes so I sat in the water wondering if it was better to stay in the cold water or get out into the cold air.
