Swim
Comments: Sighting was my biggest issue. Almost swam into a kayak. Otherwise once I got my rhythmn I was fine. Mixed up breast stroke with crawl. What would you do differently?: Must train to do nothing but crawl for entire race. I am a strong enough swimmer. OWS doesn't faze me, just do a couple of more practices and push harder in training. Transition 1
Comments: B/C of cold weather, I was afraid to ride with wet trisuit so decided to remove it, put on a long-sleeve underarmour type shirt and put on my bike shirt over that. I struggled getting the trisuit off but even worse, struggled with putting on the long-sleeve shirt. My 17-y-o son was laughing at my struggles the entire time. Eventually got it all on. Shoes were a non-issue as I had the elastic laces and had pre-powdered my socks. What would you do differently?: Go ahead and leave the trisuit shirt on and pull on a warmer shirt over the top. Maybe even just wear a light jacket (although I was worried about wind resistance). Bike
Comments: I had so many people blow by me that "on your left" became like a rythmn to me to help keep track of my cadence. My speed at just under 15mph on a mountain bike might be respectable but not with the road bikes. Even had three women pass me on the bike and they started in later waves. I, however felt good on the bike and didn't feel like I overdid it. When I started training I thought I could get to 15 miles in 45 minutes. Reality sank in during some of my last training rides so actually was pleased that I got the 15 in in one hour. What would you do differently?: I've been offered a road bike for my next race. My plan is to continue to train on the mountain bike and in the last 30 days, do some long rides on the loaner so I'm used to it on race day. Otherwise, there's not much I can do differently but train a little harder (push myself) until I can afford a road bike. Transition 2
Comments: My whole time that I trained, I struggled with sweat in my eyes so I was worried about forgetting my headband. I remembered it and was running out, and even pointed out to the volunteers that I had the headband, to get moving when one of the volunteers asked where my run belt was. Had to go back for it. Otherwise the transition was easy b/c I biked in my running shoes. What would you do differently?: Lay the running belt out underneath the headband so I don't forget either. Run
Comments: I was just plain lazy. Legs were'nt tired from run, my heart just wasn't in it. At that point, I just wanted to finish. Was passed by a 71-y-o woman. What would you do differently?: Cut the walk/run B******T. I could have run the whole race just didn't. Not an option for future races. Post race
Warm down: Crossed the finish line and was fully recovered HR-wise within 2 minutes. Just showed that I didn't run very hard. Walked back to park with my son, grabbed some water, ate their free meal and realized as I sat down to eat that I should have stretched after race. What limited your ability to perform faster: My mental state. I was disciplined during training and consistent. I just really don't feel in retrospect that I pushed as hard. I had a goal to finish my first race and really, I could have performed much better. Finishing was really never a question but I used that as an excuse for not performing/preparing better. Event comments: Race was very well-organized. People were great. Racers friendly and eager to help newbies, 1st-timers. I will definitely do it again just to beat my times but also b/c it is so well run. Last updated: 2013-01-30 12:00 AM

Couldn't sleep the night before. Tried to get to bed early but was still wide awake at 1:30am. Not good since I wanted to be up at 4:30 to leave by 5. Eventually fell into a fitful sleep and got up at 4am. Washed face and shaved then got my son up. We were at event by 5:30am. Set up went nicely although I was struggling with what to wear for race as my original plan was for warm weather and it was in the mid 40's upon arrival. Started off swim and temp was in the 50's. Breakfast was sausage, egg, cheese biscuit and some OJ.
Stretched in my usual routine and kept my body moving b/c of the cold temperatures. Our wave was allowed in water 3 minutes to start time. Best time of the day for me as the water temp was warmer than outside air temperature. I was ecstatic in 69 degree water. Swam out about 10 strokes and then back. "Played" in the water after that to loosen up like a big kid.
