Swim
Comments: First experience with LOTS of swimmers. Hung on at the back of the pack like I have done in the past but there were already a lot of swimmers on the course starting their second lap. Lots of contact, sighting was not good, had difficultly getting a good rhythm going. Didn't like the whole leaving the water and re-entry thing; not a comfortable swim. What would you do differently?: Be more aggressive in the water. Instead of allowing contact with other swimmers to affect my cadence and course; just keep swimming. Transition 1
Comments: Surprised to see all the empty bike racks, didn't realize I had done so poorly in the swim. Had a little wet suit issue but everything else went okay. still need practice. What would you do differently?: Practice transition more. Bike
Comments: I may not have been on the top of my game; got passed by a bunch of guys that were on tri-bikes and were fast. Took some nutrition after 40 minutes on the bike. I felt like I finally got my legs on the last lap around the farm land (about minute 52 on the bike) but it was too late. Took some nutrition and last hydration 6 miles before return to transition. What would you do differently?: Spend more time training for building speed. Transition 2
Comments: Had to take time to pee. What would you do differently?: Would have been a much better time if I didn't have to run to the toilet and back. Run
Comments: Legs were good, drank at every water station; took some nutrition at half way point. Endurance is very good; picked up the pace the last half of the run and felt very strong at the finish. What would you do differently?: Spend more time training for building speed. Post race
Warm down: Just walked, checked out expo area. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training for speed. The Olympic distance is very doable for me in terms of endurance but I lack the speed to be competitive. I've decided to pay for a BT membership. I need to work on increasing speed overall and am hoping the training outlined in BT schedule will help me achieve that goal. Event comments: Swim got started about 30 minutes behind published schedule. Other than the late start, the event was very well laid out and organized. Lots of enthusiastic and helpful volunteers. Traffic was controlled by Highway Patrol, local police and RP Barricade Company. This is a larger sized event, probably 800 - 900 athletes. Post race included bar-b-que and beer garden area. Routine was jacked up; last minute changes in the morning plans resulted in hoarking down an egg sandwich and rushing to the event site.
Got to event a little later than planned; felt rushed and hectic. Jogged a little on the beach and stretched hamstrings and calves.
