Pre-race routine:

Slept absolutely terrible the night before in the hotel. Maybe three hours of sleep. Headed up and set up T2, then back down to T1. Ate a Clif bar and banana at about 6:30 am.
Event warmup:

Nothing. Again I was rushed and there was no reason I should have been.
Swim
  • 32m 12s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not the best swim. Between swimmer's ear and a sprained shoulder, I haven't swum a lick in the past 2.5 weeks. Definitely felt it in this swim. Shoulders started aching right away and I just felt slow. Came out of the water a bit winded.
What would you do differently?:

Have better luck.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Not a bad T1. Put a compression sock on the left foot because of my calf.
Bike
  • 1h 50m 59s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 8.41 mile/hr
Comments:

I was pretty winded to start and it took a while to get my heart rate under control. Energy levels were up and down throughout the ride. Passed a lot but had to put my feet down a few times because of riders falling in front of me. Left knee started to bug me.
What would you do differently?:

I think I should have been able to do this ride faster than I did. I was a full mph faster than the sprint course I did two years ago but I know I have a better ride in me than this.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Pretty quick here.
Run
  • 52m 24s
  • 5.78 miles
  • 09m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good to start and began passing a lot of people. Power walked the steep sections and tried to keep my HR reasonable. Legs were definitely tired by the start of the 2nd loop. Finished relatively strong but never really put myself in the red zone.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and then laid down with my feet above me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim issues. Unknown distance. I was afraid I might blow up in this longer distance with the elevation and climbing so I didn't push the bike or run as much as I should have. I was definitely exhausted by the end, even more so than Ironman. But I think I took too much IM mentality into this race and should have gone harder. I was happy with my time as I thought I'd be more around 3:30 but having now finished, I think I'm capable of more around 3:05. Missed XTERRA points by two places.

Event comments:

Great race and probably one of the most challenging courses around. 8000-10000 feet about sea level with tons of climbing in both the bike and run makes for a physically and mentally demanding day.
