Swim
Comments: Man that water was cold! I was really expecting it to be alot warmer or at least warmer than the air temp, but no. Of course in a short swim I never feel its worth it to wear a wetsuit, due to the difficulties I have taking it off. Today may have been an exception, cause at least I would have stayed warm. Went to the right side of the course and other than one guy swimming across my face, it was a clean contact free swim. Most everyone was well left, but I stayed right and swam fairly straight. had to get out fast to get some body heat, but it was a fairly smooth swim after that. What would you do differently?: Don't wait until the last second to test the water. Transition 1
Comments: With my transition stuff in the bag it was slow and delibrate. Had some trouble getting my left foot clicked in. What would you do differently?: Really need to work on transitions. Next year! Bike
Comments: With the conditions, I just didn't have the nerve to really go after it today. I was paranoid about getting a flat or sliding off the road. So I was very conservative with respect to pace, speed, going downhill, cornering, etc. Wasn't worth it today, even though this is the only course I ever broke 20 mph on. Used it as a practice brick for next week. Once again being in the first wave (elete wave doesn't count), I only passed two people the entire way and got passed way to much. I did pick it up the way back and pushed the last few hills. Felt good however. What would you do differently?: Nothing. With the conditions, I think it was the right call today. If it were dry, I would have hammered. Transition 2
Comments: Second person back to the rack but plenty of room to rack. Calves started to cramp taking off my bike shoes. Pulled out my running shoes and found then still double knotted. So I burned time unting and retying them in the wet. Left the hat behind. By time I got up my cramping pasted and legs felt great. What would you do differently?: Prep work. Untie the shoes and set up for transition. Might look at some of those pull to lock shoelaces if I want to get serious in these short races. 1:10 slower than last year. 201st overall. Run
Comments: Legs felt great right off the bat, so I got into the flow right off the bat. The #3 woman on the course was about 10 yards ahead of me, so I just tried to stick with her early on. I got passed by 3 people early, but kept all of them in my sights while passing 2 others from my wave. Slowly pushed the effort going out. Coming back I started to get that smooth rolling feeling and felt smooth. I passed 4 more people the second half and only was passed by 2 youngsters. In the last quarter mile I caught 2 more including that #3 woman and finshed strong (but no sprint). Really strong run especially given the conditions. What would you do differently?: Not much. Still had more left, so maybe push it earlier, but can't complain. Post race
Warm down: Got my stuff, walked it to the car, loaded up got out of my soaked shirt, cranked the heater up, and drove home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Wind, Rain, road conditions, transitions. Was about 6+ minute slower than last year. Still as a C race and warm up for next week's Diamondman, I accomplished what I wanted and the run leg was one of my best and the swim was fairly good too. Event comments: This was the third year I've done this race. The fact that so many showed up on such a nasty day speaks volumes about this little race. Sold out a month in advance!! Kudos to the great volunteers who had to brave the elements and remained very positiove and supportive. Can't do anything about the weather and thing like trees falling on the course, buoys floating off. They did a great job, but I wasn't sticking around for the post raace cause the rain just started coming down harder. Last updated: 2006-06-13 12:00 AM

On the road by 5:30. Stopped for gas and questioned my sanity as the rain and howling wind chilled me to the bone. Got a little bit lost, but still made it with plenty of time. Parked out in the neighborhood and brought my stuff to the transition area. After checking in and getting my number, chip, body marked etc, I went over to transition and had to figure out what to do. Did I want to put my stuff out and risk it blowing away and getting wet or just leave it in the bag. I choose the later, in hopes of keeping my stuff dry, then got ready. Minor panic attack when I couldn't find my number, and a bit later couldn't find my glasses. So I finally put on my swim cap and goggles and lost the shirt and went to wait for the pre race meeting.
More aptly the try and stay warm up. We all huddled outside the building in the wind and rain, waiting for the meeting which started late. After the meeting we walked around to the far side of the lake. i figured the water temp would be warmer than the air temp at least, but it was freezing after all the recent rain. The elete wave went and my wave was one minute later, so little time to do other than get wet and over the shock of the cold water.
