Pre-race routine:

Bagel 2 1/2 hours before start and banana in the car on the way. One serving shot blocks 15 minutes before start.
Event warmup:

No real warm up. Swam around for 5 minutes after getting in the water waiting for the start.

Comments:

It started raining as I was waiting for my wave to start. It kept raining for the rest of the morning! After rounding the buoy, it was raining so hard that sighting to shore was very difficult. We were to swim to the dancing man, however because of the rain, he was not dancing! My sighting was so poor, that a guy on a kayak actually stopped me to tell me I was headed totally the wrong way. I have never done such a poor job sighting.
What would you do differently?:

Swim straight.

Comments:

TI was a good distance from the water. And a big uphill right out of the water. And running on rough asphalt with lots of loose gravel. This time was actually better than I expected. Had to dump water out of my helmet. Clearly didn't need my sunglasses, so just stuffed them down my top, where they remained all day.

I went a lot slower than I had hoped because I was afraid of falling. I don't usually train if it is raining. There were times that I slowed down even more because it was raining so hard that the rain hurt.

Glad I didn't see the run course before the race as it was much hillier than I expected. I hadn't done any run training in about 3 weeks because of achilles issues. It showed in this run.

Event comments:

Glad I did this race for the start of my season. I was under-trained due to injuries, but had fun. And was first Athena!

Course: The name of the race says it all. "Over the mountain". The course was hilly, through a state and a national park, and into South Carolina. The course was beautiful, even in the rain.
