Pre-race routine:

Karl woke me about 5:30. I had b'fast and then gathered up my drink for the bike and threw my running bag in the truck. K had already loaded the bikes (What a Sweetie!) and we checked to insure we both had helmets and bike shoes.
Event warmup:

We arrived early and unloaded. Met some nice people. We ran to the bathrooms which were further than we thought and missed the pre-race instructions. But our nice new friends Adrienne and Nevada explained things to us.

Comments:

The men began 3 minutes before the women so I kissed K and they were off. We waited and then we began. This was a very small race and I feel like there were only 30 or so of us women. I took it slow and easy and just settled in. I was worried about the bike so I needed to have plenty of energy.

At the end of the run, the official clock was at 12:xx so I realized that we hadn't done 3K (which I was thinking) and realized it must have been 2K. Now as I log, I think it may have been more like a mile instead of 2k.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I went ez.

Comments:

There was no chip timing so everything is a guess for each stage. My sunglasses were fogged up and I wiped them three times before I felt they were ok. I don't think I'll ever be fast in T1.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe worn my sunglasses on the run.

Comments:

I took a drink about 1/2 mile in and then dropped my bottle. Stopped to pick up and realized I had to unclip which was a moment of panic for me. 3 girls passed me as I retrieved my bottle. Then I awkwardly began again (I really am a bad cyclist) and continued on.

I forgot my Garmin so I had no idea where I was at any time. I passed sweet little Nevada and later another woman who looked like she was "so done" with the biking. I was thrilled to see the turnaround and resolved either negative split it or at least not loose much time on the 2nd part. I passed several more people and even one man. I concentrated on standing some times to work different muscles and tried to break up the cadence some to let my legs work different muscles. Near the end, I dropped down to the small chain to spin and again drank.

My time was much better than I could have hoped for. The flats were nice for me.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Learn how to ride with clipless pedals. Not drop water bottle. Arm warmers (must remember them next time). And train more. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to pick off a few people. Get in aero more. And train more.

Comments:

I was toast. The PF was bothering me but I think that either I went too hard on the bike or (more aptly) went too long on the bike for my fitness. Not exactly a great run for me.

I was thrilled to see K coming in as I was going out; he would finish sub 1:30 so I won our bet. I ran, if you can call it that, and then had to walk much more frequently than normal. I tried to limit the walk to less than one minute. The man I passed on the bike passed me early on.

Near the end, I made a turn and then wondered if it was correct because the road was different than our "out" road. The lady behind me said I was correct so I figured it was one of our extra loops. At the end of the road, I began looking for signs to turn and saw nothing. Turned around and saw that two other women had followed me down the road and had just been turned around by a biker who had finished his race. I turned and followed them back but the mistake allowed at least 3 women to pass me and maybe more. It wasn't anyone's mistake but my own; I was too foggy to pay attention to the directional sign that pointed straight. And 2 women behind me were also too foggy to notice!
What would you do differently?:

Obviously paid more attn to the directional signs.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of orange slices and talked to our new friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

LACK OF TRAINING!! Yes, I've had PF issues and that slowed me on the run but I should have overcome the mental hurdle(s) and gotten on the bike more. The PF can be seen as a way to make me stop running as much and get on the bike - but did I do that? No.

I'm glad to have done my first DU but next time, I'd like to more ready.

Event comments:

This was a very low key race with few participants. I heard some people complain about lack of hype but hey, I was glad that someone organized it and put the race on for us. The course was very marked (despite my stupidity) and volunteers or police were at the critical places.
