Swim
Comments: This was a washing machine! Maybe next time, I won't start so far back in the pack. I had to keep stopping, I was never able to gain any rhythm in the water. I think there were quite a few first timers out there. I got caught right in the middle of the pack, and I had to stop and allow the chaos to make it's way around the buoy. It was a little scary to be honest. I finally made my way around the 1st buoy, and then found myself way off course! Must have been the tide, and lack of experience sighting. I had to change direction completely and make my way back to the golden arches on the beach. I was glad this was over. It was not my best swim, but learned a lot about placement. Transition 1
What would you do differently?: First experience. Not sure how I could improve this time...perhaps with practice. Bike
Comments: This was the third time I've been on my bike this season. Darn hamstring, I curse thee! Considering I've had almost no bike training this year, I was very happy with this time. The bike was the part I was worried about most, after my hamstring flared up after my last long ride. I held back a little to spare it from further torture, but the ride was great! What would you do differently?: Ride more Transition 2
Comments: I didn't want to take any chances, so I stopped and got off. jogged it into transition. I arrived at my rack to find another bike in my spot. Arg! I had to move it aside before racking it. I also forgot to untie my shoes before the race started, so I had to sit down and loosen my laces. What would you do differently?: Untie my shoes before the race start! Run
Comments: My hamstrings and left calf felt like they were going to cramp up. Heavy heavy legs. I had to stop a couple of times to stretch out the left calf. My left foot started to cramp up a little underneath...I'm guessing a result of my tight calf. I eventually found a rhythm I could keep and finished off strong! What would you do differently?: work on my hip flexor strength and keep stretching! Post race
Warm down: ate some fruit. Walked around a bit. Found my cheering posse and celebrated that I finished! What limited your ability to perform faster: Injuries. I need to figure out this hip imbalance thing. Event comments: Well i have to rate it as best as it was my first one! Last updated: 2013-02-20 12:00 AM

Well I didn't think I was going to be able to participate in this event. After last year's Whistler Granfondo, and a partial hamstring tear, I've been trying to make a come back. After a year break from running, as suggested by my massage therapist and doctor, I slowly picked it up again, finishing the Vancouver BMO 8K in around 50min. This was in May. Unfortunately, a few days later, I developed a superficial blood clot in my left calf. I was happy it wasn't DVT, but was it ever painful. I was out for 3 weeks. It hurt to walk, it hurt to swim. I was forced to give up my triathlon specific training during this time. I now had just over a month to get back into training for today's event. On a 50km ride with my other half, I developed some pain in my left hamstring...the same one I had pulled last year...in the same place. I was forced to take 2 weeks off from running and cycling. My massage therapist advised me it wouldn't be wise to do this race, but since when do I listen? I trained for approximately 2 weeks in the pool, and a few trainer rides and a lot of stretching mixed in. After some encouragement from my friend who was also did the race, I decided to go for it. I could always drop out if I developed any pain right? Here we go!
Saturday we dropped off our bikes, picked up our packages and listened to a swim instruction and the mandatory meeting. It was a relaxing day. Went to bed around 10pm last night, and I couldn't sleep. It was a horrible sleep in fact. I woke up every hour, and had to pee every half hour. Not the smartest to drink so much before bed!
Got to the race site around 6am, set up my transition area, put on the wetsuit and went for a little swim. It felt good. I was relaxed, and what a difference the wetsuit made. It was my first time swimming in the ocean in my wetsuit, and I was loving it!
